In a nearly-three-hour marathon that featured just about everything, the visiting Gladiators finally prevailed to continue their late-season win streak. The Big Red has now won six in a row to move to 11-4 on the season.
Among the oddities featured in the game were a player being hit by a pitch on consecutive at-bats, another player being interfered by the catcher on consecutive at bats, each team using four pitchers to try and slow down the other's hitters, and only one empty inning, the second.
Despite the final result, RHS actually started out in a deep hole in this one as the Bison exploded out of the gates with a 5-run first inning, much like the Gladiators had jumped on Wilson the night before. After going scoreless again in the second, the visitors then had their own five-run inning in the third to tie things up and you had the feeling that they were just getting started.
That turned out to be exactly the case as RHS pushed across four more runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a seemingly comfortable 11-5 lead. While they were making their comeback, Michael Robertson was keeping the Bison bats at bay, having relieved starter Jakob King in the second.
Despite the six-run Big Red advantage, the Gap had a golden opportunity in the home half of the fifth to have another big inning and get right back in it as they loaded the sacks with nobody out. However, Riverheads buckled down and only allowed two runs to cross the plate to close the gap to 11-7.
Any serious thoughts of a Bison comeback were then put to rest when RHS struck for three more in the sixth to take their biggest lead of the game at 14-7. The teams then exchanged single runs to make it 15-8 heading into the home half of the seventh.
The Bison then made it at least a little interesting as they got their best hit of the night, a triple that rolled deep into the right corner that drove in two runs and led to a third, before RHS closer Braeson Fulton fanned two of the last three he faced to finally end the game.
Hopefully the Big Red will find that same kind of offense when they travel to Luray Friday. They then host R E Lee on Tuesday for Senior Night, and finally get some time off before traveling to Page on the 14th. There is talk about a rained-out game at James River being made up, but there is no official word as of yet.
