Most all damage done in the 1st inn. ..... on a 2-run double by Roberts then, Brooks cracked a 2-run homer and essentially it was over quick. As Bishop, Weeks and Coffin posted a shutout and Riverheads won for the 21st time and 24 in a row dating back to last season. Buffalo Gap-East Rock game was postponed to Wed. due to a thunderstorm.

As mentioned, Riverheads beat Wilson 6-0 in the Conference 36 baseball semi-finals on Tuesday. The Gladiators will now wait to see who they will play in the championship on Thursday since the BuffaloGap/East Rockingham game was postponed and is scheduled to be played on Wednesday.

Once again it was the Riverheads pitching that did the job today as three pitchers combined to only allow three Hornets hits in the shutout. Kyle Bishop got the start and went four innings only allowing two hits. John Weeks came in to pitch the fifth and sixth innings and Colt Miller finished it off in the seventh. Bishop probably could have finished the game under normal circumstances but there was a 20 minute lighting/thunder delay during the bottom of the 3rd and when the senior ace came in the top of the fourth, he felt tight and Coach Rodney Painter didn't want to risk an injury and pulled him.

What was a nice surprise was the way the Gladiators came out and hit the ball right off the bat. Chance Staton led off ten bottom of the first with a single to left and then stole second base. Bishop came up and laced a single to right, moving Staton to third. After Bishop stole second to put both runners in scoring position, Zach Roberts smacked a double down the left field line scoring Staton and Bishop. Then Nathan Brooks took an 0-2 pitch deep to right centerfield for his first home run of the season and the Red Pride had a quick 4-0 lead before registering an out. Billy Coffin got a RBI hit in the third scoring Staton and Bishop added one more in the fourth with a run-producing single to left center, scoring Staton.

Getting that early lead was HUGE for the Gladiators and their fans because they knew that even though they were a perfect 20-0 going in to today's game, a lost in the semi-finals, to last year's Group A Division 2 State Champions, would have ended Riverheads' season. However, now they will host the Conference championship and know they will now advance to the Regions.

There will actually be two championship game played at Riverheads as the softball team got a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to beat Wilson and advance to the Conference 36 Championship. Way to go girls!!

I said this last week and it bears repeating. The most amazing thing about this game was that it even got played. There was torrential rain all over the county today, and I was told that it poured at RHS as well. But still when I hadn't heard any different, I rode down there just in case they were still playing, and sure enough there was one of the biggest crowds of the season.

Other than the aforementioned thunder delay (I personally never saw any lightning) there was not a drop of rain the entire game and even that infamous Riverheads wind stayed away for the game. So weather-wise it could not have been a better night to play.

The other guys have already hit the highlights for you. Wilson was coming off a 21-run performance at Nelson the other day, which had to have caught the attention of the Gladiators. So as JH said, getting off to a good start was the key to this win. And your first four guys getting on base is a pretty darn good start!

In addition to that, the Gladiators played a solid defensive game, with only one harmless error, and Wilson only reached second base once, and that was not until the 7th inning. When you can bring in a second and a third pitcher and not even miss a beat, you know you are having a good night.

As mentioned, next up will be the winner of the East Rock/Gap game coming to RHS. With a 60% chance of rain both Wednesday and Thursday, I have my doubts that we will be finished with the conference by Thursday, but Friday and Saturday look like better weather days if it comes to that.
