Saturday's schedule starts with Stuarts Draft playing Floyd County, followed by Northside and Greenfield School. Then Riverheads takes the court to play Parry McCluer. The two met earlier this season with Parry McCluer winning in overtime.

"Parry McCluer is a very good 1A basketball team," Riverheads coach Chad Coffey said. "They're a good barometer for where we're at in 1A competition."

Following the Riverheads game is a pair of girls games. Parry McCluer plays Lord Botetourt and Rockbridge plays Alleghany. Then the Rockbridge and Alleghany boys meet in the final game of the event Saturday night.

LEXINGTON - Apparently shooting 3s in the morning isn't any more difficult that doing it at night, at least for Stuarts Draft.

The Cougars knocked down 16 3s Saturday in its 92-72 win over Floyd County, the first game of day two in the Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout at Rockbridge County High School. The game tipped at 11 a.m., one of six games scheduled for Saturday after three games were played Friday night

The win was the sixth in a row for Stuarts Draft, and the ninth win in the last 10 games. Draft improved to 12-6 overall with only three games, all in the Shenandoah District and all at home, remaining in the regular season.

Draft coach Mike Gale feels good about that situation, but pointed out that they could lose to any of the teams — Wilson Memorial, Luray and Lee High — left on the schedule. Draft did lose to both Wilson and Lee earlier in the season.

As for the hot streak that his team is currently on, Gale said it takes a while for the players, especially the ones that are new to the varsity team, to buy into his system of a fast-paced offense that is heavy on 3-point shooting, and pressure defense that thrives on turnovers.

"We kind of have an idea of everybody's role now and they do as well," Gale said. "They know what they're capable of and what they're supposed to be doing to help this team. We're getting a contribution from everybody. We've gotten our legs under us and we're able to sustain longer shifts and not wear down as much."

Draft led by eight after both the first and second quarters, but it was a 26-5 third-quarter run that allowed the Cougars to take control of the game.

"I was pleased with our second-half start there," said Gale. "We kind of ran them down a little bit. We hit some shots there, but we were offensively rebounding. That was the important part there, getting the boards."

Mark Rodgers led the way for Draft with 22 points, including nine in that third quarter. Antonio Ruiz-Haynes had 17 points and Tyler Goodwin finished with 11 points. Eleven different Cougars scored in the game.

It was the ninth time this season that Draft scored more than 90 points. They threatened the Rock the Ribbon scoring record of 103 points, which was set by Altavista against Stuarts Draft in 2014, the first year of the event.

It was a busy week for Draft, which also beat Buffalo Gap and Stonewall Jackson this past week.

"We got a little sloppy there in the fourth quarter," Gale said. "I'm a little concerned about that, but we'll take this and move on to next week."

Draft returns to district play Tuesday, hosting Wilson Memorial. Draft is 10-3, tied with East Rockingham and a half game ahead of Wilson, which was at Luray Saturday night.

Game 2: Boys

Greenfield (NC) leads Northside 31-28 at the break

Greenfield School's Coby White, a University of North Carolina signee, just broke the high school scoring record in the state of North Carolina.

That record in North Carolina was held by JamesOn Curry who had 3,307 points.

Coby White needed 23 points to get the record. He hit a 3 late in the first half to give him 24 for the game.

Parry McCluer holds off Riverheads' comeback

LEXINGTON - The up-and-down season for Riverheads continued Saturday afternoon at Rockbridge County High School.

After a three-game winning streak that followed a three-game losing streak, Riverheads is back on the down, dropping its second straight game Saturday at the Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout. Parry McCluer stopped Riverheads 70-57.

Riverheads is now 7-10 with another nondistrict game set for Monday at Fort Defiance.

The Gladiators fell behind by 18 at the break and were able to trim the Parry McCluer lead to 12 after three and down to six in the fourth quarter.

"We gave a good effort in the second half," Riverheads coach Chad Coffey said. "But if we had given a good effort in the first it might not have been the same ballgame. We didn't execute offensively or defensively."

Coffey didn't think his team was tired, despite a seven-point loss on the road at Luray Friday night.

What is so puzzling is that these two losses on back-to-back nights come just days after Riverheads beat Wilson Memorial by 32 points.

The coach also didn't want to blame the highs and lows of the season on a young team, although Riverheads does have just one senior and has five sophomores on the roster.

"It's the game," Coffey said. "It's the nature of the beast we're playing. We came out, we weren't shooting real well. Anybody who knows us knows that, when we're shooting well we're tough to handle. When we're not we can struggle a bit."

Among those sophomores is Braeson Fulton, who led Riverheads Saturday with 23 points, including 18 in the second half. Fulton had four 3-pointers in in those final two quarters as he tried to bring his team back.

Sophomore Grant Painter had 15 points, the only other double-figure scorer for the Red Pride Saturday.

Riverheads got its deficit to six, 53-47, with just over four minutes left in the game, but a 3-pointer by Parry McCluer's Zach Claytor was the "dagger," according to Coffey.

Still, the coach was able to take away some positives from a disappointing loss.

"I thought we got a lot of good things out of it in the second half," Coffey said. "We got it where we wanted it. We talked about one possession at a time. When we were down 19, there's no 19-point shot on the court. You just chip away at it, chip away at it, cut it down one possession at a time. We did that. Our goal was to get it down to four or six with about three minutes to go and we did that."
