A new era of high school sports in the city began Friday night as Rocktown hosted Hedgesville, W.Va. in the Raptors' inaugural game.

The home team played hard and provided a lot of fireworks during the first half, but it was the Eagles who pulled away in the second half en route to a 36-13 non-district win over Rocktown.

"We played hard, it was a good effort but we beat ourselves," said Raptors' coach Curtis Cherebim. "We didn't tackle very well and we had a lot of penalties."


On a beautiful evening and on the area's first turf field, the two teams battled toe-to-toe in the first half. The Eagles opened the game with a 13-play, 62 yard drive, all on the ground, and senior Dalton Harper scored on a 2-yard run that gave the Eagles a 6-0 lead with 5:00 to play in the first period.

Rocktown's first offensive possession was incredible. On the Raptors' initial offensive play, Ayden Groden hauled in a 29-pass on a tipped ball from Santana Perry as Groden was falling on his back at the Eagles' 35. On Rocktown's first running play, Demetrius Arrington ran for six yards and then scored on a 2-yard dive and Paul Tongen's kick put the Raptors in front 7-6. Perry was 3-of-3 passing on the drive for 66 yards.

The Rocktown boys cross country team placed third overall with a score of 79 behind Fluvanna County (24) and William Monroe (51) but ahead of Madison County (90) in a four-team meet at Pleasant Grove Cross Country Course on Wednesday.
Sophomore Aaron Graham was the top boys runner for the Raptors, placing ninth with a time of 19:38.2.
Also for RHS, sophomore Lucas Maynard (19:44.5) placed 12th and freshman Samuel Tongen (19:59.5) was 16th.

The Raptors will be back on the course with a four-team Valley District meet at home at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 11.

For the Rocktown girls, who did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score, junior Matilda Bunn finished the course in a time of 24:22.4 to place seventh while senior Janelly Aguilar Nunez (25:34.1) finished 12th overall.

Raptors have had a grueling schedule so far. It luckily gets a lot easier from here. They're at Page, host King William (they are 0-5 but are a LOT better than that, should be a good game), host Loudoun Valley (they're good), then at Culpeper, hosting Stonewall Jackson, then Maret in DC. Could definitely see 3 or maybe 4 wins in the back half. Such a brutal schedule for an inaugural season but the kids I am sure will be better for it next year.

They are not beating KW this season. Page and Stonewall should be good games. Agree 100% on the brutal opening schedule.
