Salem returns many players that played roles during last years run but must develop line and depth as usual . Returning players that could play a big role besides up and comers are

Kionte Burnette
Joe Quinn
Viante Tucker
Nate Craft
Nick Wade
Riley Fox
Noah Beckley
Vincent Pinello
\Luke Owen
DeAngelo Ramsey
Josie Staples
Thomas Mundy
Grey Wolfe
Avante Robinson is a rising sophomore who has blazing speed but must get stronger
The JV team was very good again and should supply depth and a couple of starters . As Coach Maghenbauer said during the banquet , last years team had players who just worked hard and gave their all every day . Last years team had more injuries and season ending injuries than any he could remember but overcame a lot . Salem will be pretty good but how good depends on team leadership and a lot of determined pride throughout the squad . Last year they had that in starters , backups and players that became starters after major injuries. The players that were injured stayed and helped the younger players and showed leadership skill that will help them in their lifetime . There were non starters who gave their all every day , helping the team in practice and showing leadership . Good Luck to all the Spartans heading off to figure out the rest of their lives and good luck to the 2016 version of Salem Football.

I thought Burnette was a senior this year (last fall)?

One of the questions I have is how you play DeAngelo Ramsey and Riley Fox . Being so good on defense and they are the next ones up I guess in the backfield . I think it will depend on the depth . Obviously , we have other running backs but are they ready for full time duty ? They will probably take a look , see what they have and then assess the depth situation .

Spartans are like the NE Patriots. No names step in a do their job. Outstanding Coach and program. They'll be ready for 2016.

As far as 2 way players go, most of the season, they only need them for half a game. So that should keep them fresh and solid come playoff time.

I think they'll start with Riley at FB, Deangelo at RB. They will also play on the defensive side at MLB & DE respectively. Other guys will rotate in to spell them on both sides of the ball. They'll break in Robinson at RB as a change of pace. Paisley can be used at FB & MLB. They have a lot of guys itching to get their turn. Last year they really only had one guy doing double duty. This year they may have 3 (Pinello at TE/DE to go with Fox, Ramsey) In the big games they'll play more double duty, but in other games other guys will gain experience.

I was looking at the roster to address your question about double duty/backups, and depth mainly at FB/RB, TE, LB, and DE as these are the spots that could have 2 way starters filling the spots. *Denotes starters imo at these positions

RB/FB
2 Burnette RB Sr
7 Fox FB Sr*
20 McMillan RB Jr
21 Owen RB Jr
22 Richardson RB Soph
25 Robinson RB Soph
30 Mutshipule RB Jr
38 Ramsey RB Jr*
43 Kemp RB Sr
44 Paisley FB Jr

LB
7 Fox Sr*
16 Kirtner Jr
20 McMillan Jr
32 Croke Sr
42 Britton Soph
43 Kemp Sr
44 Paisley Jr*
48 George Sr

DE
17 Close Soph
19 Pinello Sr*
32 Croke Sr
38 Ramsey Jr*
48 George Sr

TE
17 Close Soph
19 Pinello Sr*
32 Croke Sr
48 George Sr

These are just my opinions from checking the rosters and trying to guess who will go where. Like last year I expect the linemen to be decided by height, weight, strength, & speed. Last year's strategy for the DL worked great. Players that hovered around the 200 lb mark were generally selected for the DL. The linemen chosen for the OL were generally taller and weighed 230+. It looks like a few Sophomores will probably get their chance to see what they can do on the lines. 7/10 spots were lost to graduation so finding the right personnel and chemistry will be a big key and a couple may be young. (Cardwell will compete for a spot on the line as a Soph)

Must be nice to have all of that depth :(

Close and Harris (Fr) have been getting reps at LB on D in 7 on 7

I'm interested in the WR for next year. I know Tucker will play the position along with Owens, Wade, and Quinn. I wondering if any other players will be included in the rotation. They will also play defense too, I think.

There are some young sophomores ready to step up on varsity.

Close has been playing some LB and TE on 7v7. (Although he is built more like a DE.)
Close is 200 lbs and 6ft. 4in. now. Things will change when 2-a-days hit. Did I mention it is only 10 weeks until 2-a-days?

Cardwell will most likely play DL. He's got excellent footwork and is up to 250lbs. Cardwell performs his best on defense IMO. Although, I think they need him on OL too! Perhaps he could rotate in sometimes on O.

Robinson would be a good corner. He's been playing it in 7 v 7. He tracks the ball well and has great speed. I could see him playing both ways.

Good observations, another guy that could see time at LB or DE is B Pinello. (Fr) He's 6'1" 190. I would imagine his Varsity time would be limited to the 2nd half of games that are already decided. Same with Harris I would imagine, considering he'll be one of the JV's RB.

A couple of questions for Mike and other Salem fans.

Without trying to name the players, what will be the weight of the most likely five "down" offensive linemen be?

Same question for the "down" defensive linemen?

I expect Salem to be smaller on both lines than in years past---However, I also expect Salem to be very very fast at all skilled positions----but I think some others on this board can give you some specifics.

Another Salem fan & I were discussing this very issue about a month ago, it's fun to speculate, but 2 a days & a few games will give us the best idea of what works best. Last year with all of the injuries, it was musical chairs all year. Here is my way too early guess of the lines size:

245, 225, 230, 235, 265 OL
215, 245, 195, 195, 215 DL

Compared to last year:
230, 240, 225, 235, 300 OL
215, 215, 200, 210, 200 DL

The lines will be similar size wise, but experience and cohesion will take some time. I expect a couple of Sophomores to compete for playing time on the lines. These are just my opinions. I actually think one positive thing to come out of last year's injuries (sounds wrong even as I type it) is that a lot of guys got moved around and gained valuable experience at different positions. Whoever makes it through to start will have proven himself and earned the position. They have to prove themselves every week because there is a hungry guy looking to step up if his number is called. The linemen are always the key to success and this year replacing 7/10 will showcase that to me.

245, 225, 230, 235, 265 OL
215, 245, 195, 195, 215 DL

That's a lot of beef. 90% of schools would love to have that size linemen. Admittedly, compared to 2015, they are significantly lighter. But...?!?!

I haven't done any kind of serious research, but virtually all top teams have bigger that typical lines. I would think that you could probably take a total weight and correlate it to success.

Will Salem once again have a roster near 100? Wasn't the roster last year at 97?

1200 OL compared to 1230 last year.
1065 DL compared to 1040 last year. These are just my opinions and one of the guys I have listed at DL could very well be switched to the OL which would really about make the size of the lines pretty even size wise with last year. The biggest thing is just losing the experience and cohesion. I'm sure that will come in time with this group whoever is chosen to take line positions.

About 90 on the roster last year combined JV/Varsity. I would expect a similar number this year maybe more to start with because of last year's success.

One thought guys that unless you have a roster from this year then the heights and weights you are listing and comparing are from last year . Those will change quite a bit . Some will get much bigger , some will lean up and not change much , and some will change height wise a lot .

A couple were adjusted for current weights based on parent's report. You are correct though other's weights will change significantly. Hitting the weights and practice will change the numbers.

Most of the time I am right Michael . All you have to do is ask . Lol
Also these were just my best guesses as to who will play where based on who should be returning. Someone may decide to play that I don't know of yet and that could change things dramatically.

I think we may end up with an even smaller interior DL than we had last year. Coach Mag will give the seniors the first shot and the kids I am thinking of are all hitting it hard in the weight room. These kids will probably all be under 205 lbs. I think some of the bigger OL will play some on defense in spots just like we have seen the last few years.

They had kind of a small DL last year, but that worked out pretty well. I see a couple of guys being converted from LB or DE to the interior DL, similar to Shaquille Howell this past year. There were a lot of guys listed at LB or DE on last year's roster that will be in that 200 lb range that are athletic and faster than the opponent's OL who will be trying to stay in front of them.
