Hampton won the scrimmage by a count of 28-21 in what was an evenly matched, back-and-forth affair.

Kellam got on the board first on a 10-yard touchdown run by Kody Elmer. The Crabbers answered with Virginia Tech commit Jovonn 'Bubba' Quillen finding Anton Brown for an 18-yard touchdown, but their two-point conversion failed, giving Kellam a 7-6 lead after one quarter of play.

That would be the score at intermission as the Knights' defense was solid without four-year starter Ben James, out due to illness. Senior linebacker Stephen Copeland did a particularly strong job against the Crabbers' run game.

In the second half, it would be Hampton striking first on an electric 52-yard touchdown run by Quillen. Once again, the two-point conversion was unsuccessful, putting the Crabbers up by a count of 12-7 with 3:55 left in the third quarter. But the Knights responded with a lengthy 15-play, 70-yard drive, capped by Trevon Thorpe's 8-yard touchdown run.

Less than a minute after Kellam took a 14-12 lead, the Crabbers went back in front on Quillen's 70-yard touchdown pass to Dazz Newsome. This time the two-point conversion was good, giving them a 20-14 advantage.

With 3:35 left in the scrimmage, Kellam's starters left a solid impression on their final drive with Thorpe scoring his second touchdown the night, this one from three yards out, to finish off a 10-play, 70-yard drive. The PAT gave the Knights a slim 21-20 lead.

Quillen's scrambling and playmaking skills allowed the Crabbers to slice and dice Kellam's second unit on the game's final series. He scored on an 11-touchdown run, followed by Newsome's two-point conversion run, to give the Crabbers a 28-21 lead with 38 seconds remaining.

Looking for the program's 800th win, Hampton will open on September 3rd against Denbigh at Todd Stadium in Newport News. Meanwhile, Kellam's opener is September 3rd at home vs. Tallwood.
