That went about like I expected and not as well as I had hoped. It didn't help that our top 2 RBs were held out nursing injuries. I thought we might work more on other parts of our offense with that being the case. Varina's D line controlled the LOS for the most part; Deep Run wasn't able to take advantage of the opportunities they gave us.

First Offenses (DR 1st QB only played 1st series) went two 12 play series:
VHS drove the length and scored a rushing TD on the 1st series and kicked a 44 yd field goal on the 2nd.
DR fumbled (turnover) on the 4th play and only managed a couple of first downs combined the two series.

VHS went to their 2QB (not sure how many other subs they made 1st WRs were out there). S dropped an INT. VHS drove for another rushing TD.

DR (3rd QB) still couldn't get much going, but overthrew a WR behind the defense down the sideline. Refs blew dead a play that might have turned into a score. QB was sacked & fumbled and the ball popped out of the pile which was then scooped up by a RB who broke into the clear. It is hard to complain about not scoring on a busted play and hard to fault the ref behind the play for not seeing the ball pop out the side.

VHS (3rd QB) against the 3rd D scored 2 rushing TDs (one about 70 yds).
LIghtning brought the evening to a close.

Summary:
I thought Varina looked good. I would like to think they were great which would make our performance better than it looked. Their D did a great job swarming to the ball. They didn't look as big at LB or DB as they have in past years, but they might be quicker. Offensively their inside misdirection plays were effective and they picked up yardage on the WR screen passes. Their WRs got away with some pretty blatant grabbing and blocks in the back with only one call. I imagine they will clean that up after they see the film.

Deep Run has some adjustments to make with blocking on the O Line. I will be interested to see if they make any moves on the D Line as well. They definitely need the starters healthy and on the field. Hopefully they can improve leading up to the next scrimmage.

I love watching the young bull McKiever run man. Im not from the Springs but started checking them out 2 years ago. Been a regular ever since. I say talent prevails and HS reps 5a South
We have McKeiver and Rayquan Smith (Rabbit) in the backfield! He too is like a bull and fast! (Track star)...we are deep with rbs and wrs

From my estimation, and it look like everyone elses on the board... VHS is a solid top 10 team in RVA. Sounds like DR slipped on a few banana peels early. As long as they didnt manhandle you, I think you'll be in the playoff mix when everything shakes out. Awesome write-up and good luck in week 1.

@BirdFan15 welcome back! Give us the low down. How is Bird looking? How are you compared to last year? etc.
I'm thinking 7-3 or 8-2. So far the running game and defense are behind last years. It's early so I'm sure they will make some adjustments. Like most people I see the potential losses Man, Mon, TD. Manchester is just a bad matchup. They really took it to Bird last year, and I think Monacan and TD will be toss ups. I think the winner of Herm and HS will be the favorite and will have the inside track to the number 1 seed.
