This Friday and Saturday, most of the area teams are either off for the weekend or they will play in the second annual Shenandoah Classic at JMU's Bridgeforth Stadium. For those of you who are not familiar, this is a five-game event spread out over two days, the idea being to give area high school teams the experience of playing in a big-time college arena.

Last year's event was very well-received so they decided to do it again. By the time the weekend is over, almost every Augusta/Rockingham team will have played in it at least once. My Gladiators have not yet been invited, but that has been strictly a scheduling issue and I am guessing they will get their shot next year.

Speaking of the Gladiators, their home game with Stonewall will be the only game played in Augusta County this weekend because of the classic. We don't need to spend much time analyzing that one other than to say that the Big Red will have a successful Homecoming. I will also add that I don't think the Generals will give up 70 again. That is just not Riverheads' style of play, so I expect maybe a 42 point first half, and a running clock with the game likely not getting out of the 50s.

The only Valley District game not being played at JMU has Turner Ashby going to Rockbridge County. On paper, that looks like a fairly easy win for the home team.

As for the JMU slate, there are three Shenandoah games and two Valley District, so go out and see whichever ones interest you. I believe the Friday night doubleheader costs $7.00 and the Saturday triple-feature is $10.00. If I am wrong, someone please correct me.

Sorry for the break in the action there but my computer was going berserk, so I had to log out and start over again. We are doing much better now. So as I was about to say, here is the schedule with my take on each game:

Friday, 6:00 PM- Stuarts Draft vs. East Rockingham- Appears to be the best game of the weekend. SD is hanging around in case the three Shenandoah unbeatens should stumble, whereas East Rock is playing well despite the graduation of the McNair to Butler duo. Should be a margin of a TD or less, but gotta go with the Draft.

Friday, 8:15 PM- Lee High vs. Wilson- The Leemen are so far enjoying their time in the Shenandoah and they should roll in this one. Not much of a chance that they will be caught looking ahead to next Friday's trip to Luray.

Saturday, 2:00 PM- Buffalo Gap vs. Page County- The Bison must be the most frustrated team around having lost three games in a row, despite being right in the thick of all three of them. Page will offer a little bit of a challenge and the Gap might have to work for it, but this one looks like a 2-3 TD Bison win.

Saturday, 4:30 PM- Broadway vs. Spotswood- Both of these had a lot of holes to fill this year, but I think the Blazers are 3-4 TDs closer to filling theirs.

Saturday, 7:00 PM- Harrisonburg vs. Waynesboro- These two hosted powerhouse Brookville on consecutive weekends, so that should give us a measuring stick. The Bees rocked W'boro with a 500+ yard passing effort and almost 800 yards of total offense, whereas H'burg stayed within 10 points of them. Based on that, I gotta go with the Class 5-A Streaks in this one, although if I recall the Little Giants showed up to play in last year's Classic and just might again.

The remaining teams, Luray and Fort Defiance, have the week off. The entire Bulldog team will probably be in the stands scouting the Leemen Friday in preparation for their October 6th date, whereas the Indians still have hopes for at least a couple more wins this season and are probably thankful for the time off.

I don't know what I was doing last year that I missed this, but this is a great idea. I was trying to decide which of Friday's games to see, but now I can see both!

I was at Luray-Stonewall. Style of play had no effect on the score. Luray was 3 yards and a cloud of dust on every play, except for it was 30 yards and a cloud of dust.

longtimerhsfan.....you are wrong on the Saturday admission price. It is only $7 for Saturday as well, and you can watch 3 games.....if you'd like to sit there for about 8 hours. At least that's the email we received yesterday. VHSL/VHSCA passes will work, however, Shenandoah District passes do not is what I've been told.
