Once again I have free time at work so here is my take on this week's Tuesday/Wednesday games. Of course this is all based on the assumption that enough snow will have been cleared away to allow them to be played.
First of all, the suspense is long over as to who will win the regular season this year. Some schools are not even halfway through their district schedule but it is what it is, and we should all get behind East Rock when the post-season rolls around and hope that they represent us well and advance far.
But at least there are some minor suspense points to watch. For example:
There are probably five teams legitimately battling it out for the two through six spots. This will of course be important for seeding in the district tournament, since one through four will get to host quarter-final games and of course the two-seed would likely get to host a semi-final as well.
As of the moment I think Riverheads is in the number two slot, at three district losses, and they have two factors working in their favor. First of all they are finished with East Rock, which accounted for two of those losses, and secondly they have a favorable home schedule, as they have played 7 out of 10 so far on the road and tomorrow will be number 8 if it gets played. However, having said all of that, the Gladiators cannot relax by any stretch as they still have home games with Wilson and Stuarts Draft, a road game at Lee, and they have not played Buffalo Gap either place.
As for the others in the race for those top four spots, Lee won at Wilson which should help their cause. Page also has a road win at the Hive. Stuarts Draft continues to be on again/off again and remains capable of giving anybody on their schedule fits on any given night.
There is also the matter of 7-9th place as we watch to see how Buffalo Gap and Stonewall sort things out between themselves and whether Luray will manage a win anywhere along the line.
OK to get to the subject of this week's games, since somebody just handed me something to do here at work (You can tell my priorities, can't you???), here is the schedule:
Riverheads at Buffalo Gap: With this rivalry need we say more? The Gladiators will be favored on paper but this could be a trap game if the Gap gets fired up.
Lee at Stonewall: Should be a massacre.
Page at East Rock: This game was interesting the first time around, but Page is not the team they were that night and East Rock has rolled. I doubt if this one will be very competitive this time around.
Luray at Wilson: Hornets should roll easily.
Then that leaves a Wednesday game at Riverheads with the Gladiators hosting Stuarts Draft. Should be the game of the mid-week as they had a donnybrook at the Draft last week and the Cougars have been plotting their revenge ever since. If Riverheads can pull off the season sweep, it will be the first time they have managed that since SD went to their frantic style of offense.
