Assuming it is never too early to start talking football, here are my thoughts on this year's district race. I am putting this in the 2-A thread since the majority of our teams (5 out of 8) are 2-A teams.

I am sure it will not turn out to be this simple, but I can almost go right down the list and rank the teams two by two. Here is what I mean:

1 and 2: My thoughts are that this will come down to Riverheads and East Rock. The Gladiators will re-load like they always do and will have their usual stable-full of running backs, so I see them as being definite front-runners and surely a strong playoff candidate at the end of the season. However, Lee High and Waynesboro will be a pair of non-district toughies that could make the early season interesting. As for the Eagles, their season should be all about the senior campaign of Jaylen McNeir. I don't know enough about the rest of their team to know how much support he will get, but just his presence alone should make them a contender.

3 and 4: Buffalo Gap and Stuarts Draft: Last year, the Bison were sailing along doing great things until they got steamrolled at Appomattox. But considering where that particular train ended up, maybe it was not so bad after all. So the key to another Bison run may be in how much returning talent they have. I know they had a do-it-all senior running back (name escapes me) so losing him could be a big blow to their chances. As for the Draft, my perception of them last year was that they were a young team on the way up. If that was the case, I might have to give them the edge over the Bison, since the game between them will be played at the Cougar Den. SD also gets Riverheads at home in the season finale, so depending on how things work out, that could be a VERY meaningful game.

5 and 6: Luray and Wilson: If I recall, both had roughly break-even seasons last year but still made it into their respective playoffs. The game between them (at Wilson) from what I read in the papers saw the Hornets win the battle (statistically-speaking) but lose the war on the scoreboard. There is probably no major reason to expect that one or the other will surge that much higher in the standings.

7 and 8: Page and Stonewall: The struggles of these two programs are well-documented but each deserves credit for continuing to get enough commitment to field a team and try to stay competitive. If they stick with it, each will have its day in the sun one of these old days. Obviously one will have to beat the other, but a realistic goal will be to surprise someone else in the league and pull off an upset.

Thoughts?

1. Riverheads-- I've found that it's not wise to pick against them to win the district as long as Casto is the head man
2. East Rock
3. Stuarts Draft
4. Buffalo Gap
5. Wilson
6. Luray
7/8. Page/Stonewall

I have heard some talk that Lee is trying to get into the Shenandoah District, but I'm not sure if/when that will even happen, but that could shake the rankings up a little bit in the 2-5 range. I like what the new coach is doing and I can see them being a force in the coming years if the kids continue to buy in. He's got the boys putting in a lot of work this offseason.

if that passes which it will, Lee will join as the 9th member of the Shenandoah District next season. Rockbridge would replace them in the Valley District.

Yes, RE Lee. Will be interesting to see if they get in or not. I know some coaches/ADs have not wanted them to join in the past. So we'll see what happens.

Also, remember that Luray enters this season with a new coach after the house-clearing operation that happened at LHS within the athletics. Still not sure I understand how a coach at a non-traditional football school makes the playoffs for 4 consecutive years and gives Essex a run for their money at their place, and is still forced out.

A former Shenandoah District football coach was spotted at one school yesterday helping with the offseason weight program. Stay tuned.

Gtown, you have been holding out on us! Down here in the Valley, we don't get much news from up north, so this is the first I am hearing of this house-cleaning you mentioned at Luray. Sounds like it could make for an interesting story.

Luray has been what I would call "consistently competitive" over the years, meaning they might not have many titles in their case, but yet you always knew you were going to get a battle out of them. Not only that, but they had some good JV teams the last year or two, which would normally be a sign of a program on the way up.

As for your last statement, I think you made that one intentionally mysterious. Teasing us, aren't you?

I've never understood why Lee would want to do it...

It will be more costly travel-wise --- no luray/page/stonewall trips
Those teams don't want to make another long trip down this way either.

For playoffs it makes no difference because you get to play 2A teams

Traditional rivals like Harrisonburg and Waynesboro are maintained....

It's not like other than Hburg they are playing gigantic schools out of their league

good point, plus Lee gets extra power points when they play schools from higher divisions thus a higher seed for their 2A conference tournaments. Natural and long standing rivalries will definitely suffered when Lee makes the move. Out of district schedules for Shenandoah teams will also only consist of 2 games for football with the addition of a 9th team as well.

Just saw in the paper today that Lee will be in the Shenandoah District for the 2017-2018 season. Per that article, when the change happens they will play Harrisonburg in a benefit game, and will not schedule the Waynesboro game for football as Waynesboro already has Draft and Wilson. The article did say that they would play 2 valley district schools in the 2 out of district games though.

I know when Coach Dull stepped down as the girls basketball coach, he said Lee needed to get out of the Valley District, because they start each season 0-6 by having TA, Broadway, and Spotswood on the schedule. With that said-- Particularly in football, I would prefer that they stay in the valley for the reasons you mentioned, and they are competitive in that district every year as is.

Don't be surprised if Luray and Page look to go to the Bull Run in the near future...

Stonewall could go either way
I think East Rock will stay.

Doubtful that Page wants to go back to the Bull Run district. We just switched from Conference 35 (all Bull Run schools) to Conference 36 just so we could be in with the Shenandoah District teams (plus Lee and Nelson County).

Rumor around Lee for years was that if they joined the shenandoah, the northern doah schools would join bull run

Well I can tell you that no one at Page wants to go back and join the Bull Run. If forced to, then that's a different story. But I believe we would all rather make the trips to Augusta County than Falls Church.

I doubt if Page is allowed (or wanted) in the Bull Run. I hear there is still bad blood when they dropped some BR teams, unexpectedly, from the football schedule a few years ago. The Bull Run already has 9 schools...that is plenty.

I think Stuarts Draft has the most returning talent in the district. If they play to their potential they should make a lot of noise this year. Next would be East Rock. Gap I think will drop down after losing a lot from last years team. That being said, Riverheads will probably win the district because they have a decent group of kids returning and Casto and crew refuse to graduate.

There may be bad blood according to some of the Bull Run teams (I suspect Madison and Strasburg since they were the two we were playing at the time). But Page went out and picked up Nelson and Rappahannock Co, both of which they have beaten in the last couple of years. For a struggling program like Page, why wouldn't you want to go out and schedule someone you at least have the opportunity to beat rather than being beat year in and year out.

I think it had more to do with the timing and them just wanting to drop football but playing the other sports. From my understanding, Page dropping some of the BRD teams caused them some scheduling hardships. By the way, any public school team that voluntarily plays Rapp. Co. should be ashamed of themselves. That is not the way to improve your team. Just saying...

Definitely not a good way to improve your team, but gave a struggling program like Page a desperately needed win last season. I cannot figure out why George Mason schedules Rapp Co, I see more wrong with that than I do Page picking them up. Said it before and I'll say it again, the Panthers need to pick up all of the JV teams in the Bull Run and let their varsity play them. Better than playing "Mom 'n' Dads Basement Bible School" like some schools are known to do (oh, hi Chincoteague..).

Consider this though.. Rapp Co did win a game last year, 54-6, imagine how BAAAADD that school was that they beat!
