We have passed the halfway point of the season, and although the idea of a district "champion" is no longer relevant because the six teams are in three different classifications when it comes to playoffs, I am sure that all of them would like to finish on top at the end of their ten-game round robin with one another. As of the moment, it has been such a weird year that as many as five of the six would appear to have a chance to still say "We're number one!"
As mentioned in an earlier thread, protecting the home court has been hard this year without fans to scream and yell a team to victory. As a result, everybody has at least one road win, everybody has lost at lease once at home, and some teams have won more often on the road than they have at home.
As we head into the final two weeks, looking at the all-important loss column, Wilson has two (ironically both to last-place Stuarts Draft); and Fort Defiance, Riverheads, and Staunton are all nipping at the Hornets' heels (although I guess Hornets don't really HAVE heels, do they?) with three losses each. Buffalo Gap can't be ruled out with its four losses and in fact the Bison could do themselves and everybody else a huge favor if they can knock off Wilson at the Gap tomorrow night. That leaves Stuarts Draft, which has had a frustrating season with five losses, and is most likely out of the title picture but can still play the role of spoiler. At the start of the season, the Cougars were one of my picks to rule the roost but apparently injuries have taken a toll over there.
In addition to the BG/WM game Friday night, Staunton travels to Stuarts Draft in a must-win situation if they hope to remain in contention, and Fort Defiance visits Riverheads where the winner will stay in the title chase, and the loser might wave goodbye to its chance for regular-season honors, especially if Wilson does subdue the Bison.
As they say......it is going to be a bumpy ride!
