Hey Group: I was out of town last weekend but it sounds like I didn't miss too much, since we are still in the non-district part of the schedule. If there was a game result that surprised me, it was East Rock losing in the final seconds at Madison. Since Luray had won a close one at Madison the week before, are we supposed to infer that the Dogs might be on a par with the Eagles this year in the Shenandoah? If so, then that is a hmmmmmmm I wonder thought to consider.

But that was then and this is now....So looking ahead to this week's games, the final week before we start district action, here is the way I see them playing out:

Riverheads at Waynesboro: Last time out (the Covington game) the Gladiators were not exactly a well-oiled machine, but the bye week should have smoothed out some of those wrinkles. The Giants have not figured out RHS' system these last three years since they renewed their rivalry, plus they no longer have Chris Baker, so I expect another Big Red win in the series, but I doubt if the Giants will roll over and play dead. Last two years have been the same score (35-21) so something in that range would not surprise me.

Stuarts Draft at Broadway: Tough one to call since there are no common opponents. The Cougars so far seem to be the Izzy Johnson show, so if the Gobblers can control him, they come out on top. I call this one a toss-up with the home team squeezing out a win.

George Mason at Luray: I believe I am correct that the Dogs are unbeaten so far this year. If so, then they could roll into Riverheads next week for a battle of the unbeatens. But I don't know enough about GM to know if that will happen. I am guessing it will, which should make for an interesting district opener.

Well that will teach me to take a week off! I had sat here thinking "Who are the other five teams playing this week?" When I could not come up with anything, I checked the Shenandoah website and much to my surprise, they all have bye weeks!

As far as the Valley, which I don't know as well.........I know that Lord Botetourt is at Fort Defiance, and that should be a rout.

Turner Ashby plays Brookville but I don't recall where. But unless the Bees are having a down year, they should win that one.

That is all I can recall for now and since I should be working anyway, I will sign off and let the rest of you comment or fill in the blanks as needed.

Spotswood plays at Monticello as well.

Harrisonburg plays at Brookville

Turner Ashby plays at home vs Central Woodstock

Robert E. Lee plays at Goochland.

East Rock, Stonewall, Buffalo Gap, and Wilson all have BYES.

Of course it will be a homer pick @longtimerhsfan but I think Broadway is pretty down at 0-3, so I would think this game may be like the Fort Defiance game. Riverheads shouldn't have much of a problem with Waynesboro,

I look for Riverheads to win pretty easily over Waynesboro. 3-4 scores ahead

Stuarts Draft over Broadway. 2 scores better

GM & Luray is a toss up for me because I'm not familiar enough with them

Brookville over Harrisonburg by a lot

Goochland over Lee by 2-3 scores. While the Leemen have a few victories under their belts, there are still some struggles particularly with penalties and lack of 'sharpness' on offense. Hopeful that they can continue to get better with each game though

Dont know about the other 2 games

I'll take Riverheads, Draft, and Luray in Shenandoah games this week.

Someone forgot to mention that Page also has a bye this week. Let's not forget the Panthers, who are 2-1 on the season. Best season so far in our 7 years at the school. They have Stonewall next week.

Also, good luck to all of the Shenandoah teams competing in the Augusta Invitational on Saturday morning.

gtown, behave yourself or I will hit you over the head with your own mike! In my second post above, I said that I had checked the Shenandoah website and found out that the other five Shenandoah teams all have byes this week.

I guess the Panthers' success has you so excited that you read too fast!!! Keep up the good work and we will see just HOW good the Panthers are on the 14th.

I don't know what mic you speak of as I've retired from the world of announcing, at least for now. Cross country takes a lot of my time, and I enjoy the gym too much. And I haven't been to a football game so far this year. Do I think the Panthers can play with Riverheads? Honestly, no. Are they better than they have been? Yes.
