You guys are accustomed to seeing me on here each week predicting what I expect to see on the following Friday night. For the last half of the regular season, I only discussed each week's three Shenandoah District games but now, during this transition stage, I will branch out a little and open up some dialogue about our friends in the Valley and Bull Run Districts as well. After all, the herds will be thinned out soon enough, so as more time passes we will have fewer games to discuss anyway. So we might as well give everybody their proper respect.
So first of all let's wrap up the regular season in each race and then discuss the upcoming playoffs. Again remember that I do a lot of this from memory so if I make a blunder, please feel free to address it.
SHENANDOAH DISTRICT REGULAR SEASON: Friday night all three road teams won in much easier fashion than expected. So as a result the six teams finished in a straight up and down the list order as follows...Riverheads, Stuarts Draft, Buffalo Gap, Fort Defiance, Wilson and Staunton. The top three will be advancing to playoff action whereas the other three will get ready for basketball.
VALLEY DISTRICT REGULAR SEASON: Likewise, there was a surprise on Friday night, at least in terms of margin of victory, as Spotswood absolutely steamrolled Harrisonburg 54-7 to finish perfect on the regular season. As a result that district likewise finished all in a nice neat order...Spotswood, Rockbridge, Harrisonburg, Turner Ashby, Broadway, and Waynesboro. The top four are still alive in playoffs, whereas the Gobblers and Little Giants can only hope for better things next year.
BULL RUN DISTRICT REGULAR SEASON: In case you are wondering why I am even mentioning them on here, it is because four of them were still with us in the Shenandoah up until this year, so naturally we are curious as to how they did in the new district. There was little media coverage down here, but from the little bit I have pieced together, I get the idea that it was a competitive district that went down to the wire. I believe Luray won it, but they got stiff challenges from Strasburg and Clarke. East Rock recovered from a slow start to finish with a winning record, and in perhaps the best feel-good story of the season, Page County completed its steady upward climb with a 7-3 record and a playoff berth. Heck, even Stonewall with its Super Concession Stand picked up a couple of wins to hopefully get started on its own climb up the ladder. As a result of all that parity, the BR has claimed five of the eight spots in the Class 2, Region B playoffs.
So shall we get to those playoffs.......starting with Class 1 and working our way up to H'burg, which competes at the Class 5 level.............
Class 1, Region B.........# 8 Rappahannock County at # 1 Riverheads.......I understand some of the opinions I have read on here about why this game should even exist. Watered down playoffs and all that jazz. But I for one want to see it played because RHS, if it can go the distance, has a chance to finish at an all-time best 15-0. It is what it is and RHS could score 100 or more if they wanted to. But Casto is no dummy and has his eye on the big picture, so expect early substitutions and some deliberate efforts to AVOID running up the score. I don't think he would go so far as to hold his starters out altogether, but when you read my post-game recap on Friday night, be prepared to see some names you have never seen before. Expect a 56-6 kind of finish.
Class 2, Region B..........# 8 Buffalo Gap at # 1 Stuarts Draft............This has the potential to be a very close game for an 8/1 affair. They have already had one tight one, plus BG has confidence going in, whereas the Cougars may have some nerves creeping in after Friday's trip to the woodshed. I still expect Draft to win but a Bison victory would not be the biggest upset of all time.
Class 2, Region B........# 7 Page County at # 2 Buckingham........Since B'ham is the only non-Shenandoah/Bull Run team in the whole field, they could be the best of the whole pack or they could be the worst. They supposedly have a strong passing game. I would love to see the Panthers advance but the home team will likely be favored in most corners.
Class 2, Region B.......# 6 East Rock at # 3 Clarke County......referring back to my comments above, this one could be close. I seem to recall hearing about a big-time Clarke player being injured so his presence or absence could be a factor. If I have to go out on a limb and actually PREDICT a lower-seed victory, this could be the one I would choose.
Class 2, Region B....# 5 Strasburg at # 4 Luray.......I believe these two just met Friday at Strasburg and the Dogs won by a touchdown. So there might be another close one. Let's go with the home team but with any 4/5 match-up, you just never know.
Class 3, Region C.....# 8 Western Albemarle at # 1 Heritage..........although WA is not a local team in the usual sense, we will still keep a watch on this one so as to follow the region as a whole. Rumor has it that Bad Brad and the Boys will be the favorite in this region, if not the state, so the Warriors will probably not have a pleasant evening.
Class 3, Region C.........# 7 Fluvanna at # 2 Spotswood.........another unknown quantity with the Flucos but in the season-opener, they just barely squeaked by Broadway, which tells me all I need to know. The Wood wins big in this one.
Class 3, Region C.......# 6 Brookville at # 3 Rockbridge..........Overall Brookville has a long-standing tradition of excellence so I am surprised to see them seeded this low. Rockbridge could be in for a tussle and an early exit.
Class 3, Region C..........# 5 Turner Ashby at # 4 Liberty Christian Academy.......TA has been a team of mystery this year.........they lose by a field goal to both Spotswood and Rockbridge, both on the road no less; yet they get pummeled at home by Harrisonburg and somehow actually lost at home to Staunton, the Shenandoah cellar-dweller. LCA on the other hand came to Staunton and pounded the Storm. So if anything, this particular 4/5 match-up looks like it could be a landslide for the home team.
Class 5, Region D............# 5 William Fleming at # 4 Harrisonburg..........this is the time of the year you have to feel sorry for the Streaks, being the only D-5 team in this immediate area. But at least they drew a home game in the first round. Of course I think I recall that these two played earlier in Roanoke and that WF won easily. Could be just a difference in overall level of competition between the two areas. At least in a few more years, H'burg will shrink in size when they build a second high school in the Friendly City.
So that is my take........let the games begin!!!!
