You guys are accustomed to seeing me on here each week predicting what I expect to see on the following Friday night. For the last half of the regular season, I only discussed each week's three Shenandoah District games but now, during this transition stage, I will branch out a little and open up some dialogue about our friends in the Valley and Bull Run Districts as well. After all, the herds will be thinned out soon enough, so as more time passes we will have fewer games to discuss anyway. So we might as well give everybody their proper respect.

So first of all let's wrap up the regular season in each race and then discuss the upcoming playoffs. Again remember that I do a lot of this from memory so if I make a blunder, please feel free to address it.

SHENANDOAH DISTRICT REGULAR SEASON: Friday night all three road teams won in much easier fashion than expected. So as a result the six teams finished in a straight up and down the list order as follows...Riverheads, Stuarts Draft, Buffalo Gap, Fort Defiance, Wilson and Staunton. The top three will be advancing to playoff action whereas the other three will get ready for basketball.

VALLEY DISTRICT REGULAR SEASON: Likewise, there was a surprise on Friday night, at least in terms of margin of victory, as Spotswood absolutely steamrolled Harrisonburg 54-7 to finish perfect on the regular season. As a result that district likewise finished all in a nice neat order...Spotswood, Rockbridge, Harrisonburg, Turner Ashby, Broadway, and Waynesboro. The top four are still alive in playoffs, whereas the Gobblers and Little Giants can only hope for better things next year.

BULL RUN DISTRICT REGULAR SEASON: In case you are wondering why I am even mentioning them on here, it is because four of them were still with us in the Shenandoah up until this year, so naturally we are curious as to how they did in the new district. There was little media coverage down here, but from the little bit I have pieced together, I get the idea that it was a competitive district that went down to the wire. I believe Luray won it, but they got stiff challenges from Strasburg and Clarke. East Rock recovered from a slow start to finish with a winning record, and in perhaps the best feel-good story of the season, Page County completed its steady upward climb with a 7-3 record and a playoff berth. Heck, even Stonewall with its Super Concession Stand picked up a couple of wins to hopefully get started on its own climb up the ladder. As a result of all that parity, the BR has claimed five of the eight spots in the Class 2, Region B playoffs.

So shall we get to those playoffs.......starting with Class 1 and working our way up to H'burg, which competes at the Class 5 level.............

Class 1, Region B.........# 8 Rappahannock County at # 1 Riverheads.......I understand some of the opinions I have read on here about why this game should even exist. Watered down playoffs and all that jazz. But I for one want to see it played because RHS, if it can go the distance, has a chance to finish at an all-time best 15-0. It is what it is and RHS could score 100 or more if they wanted to. But Casto is no dummy and has his eye on the big picture, so expect early substitutions and some deliberate efforts to AVOID running up the score. I don't think he would go so far as to hold his starters out altogether, but when you read my post-game recap on Friday night, be prepared to see some names you have never seen before. Expect a 56-6 kind of finish.

Class 2, Region B..........# 8 Buffalo Gap at # 1 Stuarts Draft............This has the potential to be a very close game for an 8/1 affair. They have already had one tight one, plus BG has confidence going in, whereas the Cougars may have some nerves creeping in after Friday's trip to the woodshed. I still expect Draft to win but a Bison victory would not be the biggest upset of all time.

Class 2, Region B........# 7 Page County at # 2 Buckingham........Since B'ham is the only non-Shenandoah/Bull Run team in the whole field, they could be the best of the whole pack or they could be the worst. They supposedly have a strong passing game. I would love to see the Panthers advance but the home team will likely be favored in most corners.

Class 2, Region B.......# 6 East Rock at # 3 Clarke County......referring back to my comments above, this one could be close. I seem to recall hearing about a big-time Clarke player being injured so his presence or absence could be a factor. If I have to go out on a limb and actually PREDICT a lower-seed victory, this could be the one I would choose.

Class 2, Region B....# 5 Strasburg at # 4 Luray.......I believe these two just met Friday at Strasburg and the Dogs won by a touchdown. So there might be another close one. Let's go with the home team but with any 4/5 match-up, you just never know.

Class 3, Region C.....# 8 Western Albemarle at # 1 Heritage..........although WA is not a local team in the usual sense, we will still keep a watch on this one so as to follow the region as a whole. Rumor has it that Bad Brad and the Boys will be the favorite in this region, if not the state, so the Warriors will probably not have a pleasant evening.

Class 3, Region C.........# 7 Fluvanna at # 2 Spotswood.........another unknown quantity with the Flucos but in the season-opener, they just barely squeaked by Broadway, which tells me all I need to know. The Wood wins big in this one.

Class 3, Region C.......# 6 Brookville at # 3 Rockbridge..........Overall Brookville has a long-standing tradition of excellence so I am surprised to see them seeded this low. Rockbridge could be in for a tussle and an early exit.

Class 3, Region C..........# 5 Turner Ashby at # 4 Liberty Christian Academy.......TA has been a team of mystery this year.........they lose by a field goal to both Spotswood and Rockbridge, both on the road no less; yet they get pummeled at home by Harrisonburg and somehow actually lost at home to Staunton, the Shenandoah cellar-dweller. LCA on the other hand came to Staunton and pounded the Storm. So if anything, this particular 4/5 match-up looks like it could be a landslide for the home team.

Class 5, Region D............# 5 William Fleming at # 4 Harrisonburg..........this is the time of the year you have to feel sorry for the Streaks, being the only D-5 team in this immediate area. But at least they drew a home game in the first round. Of course I think I recall that these two played earlier in Roanoke and that WF won easily. Could be just a difference in overall level of competition between the two areas. At least in a few more years, H'burg will shrink in size when they build a second high school in the Friendly City.

So that is my take........let the games begin!!!!

While it may not mean much at this moment, Clarke did beat ER 42-7 early in the season.

If you venture to the 3a board it sounds like Rockbridge doesn't have a chance against Brookville, and 10-0 Spotswood not a much better chance?

As for SD, it just depends on how they respond to the beating they took Friday night. They had quite a few mistakes against BG the 1st time around, and if the same happens they could be be going home early. And even if they don't turn it over like they did the 1st time, but miss opportunities like they did against the Gladiators and it could be a nail biting night. I'll go as far to say that if BG had crept into the 6th seed I would have probably picked them to win.

Ouch! I did not know about that Clarke/East Rock score! As I said we heard very little down here about the Bull Run.

As for Brookville and whatever threat they may turn out to be, you do have to admit that both Rockbridge and Spotswood have made some earlier-than-expected exits over the years.

I agree, but I think it is really based on the outcome of last year with Spotswood just from what I remember reading earlier in year. Looking at their schedule/record, even at 4-6 I wouldn't be surprised to see Brookville win. Most of their games were rather close.

Speaking of Spotswood, and going off Endzone with them at #1 and Riverheads #2, I would like to see that game. I would favor Riverheads. While I don't think that you are 35 better than SD, you were CLEARLY the better team that night, and 99.9% would be most nights. I think this is the best Riverheads team I have seen and that is saying something

A couple of comments from the cheap seats.

First off Draft is in for a fist fight with Gap. I do think they will win but it may be even closer to even this time. I am going to piss any Cougar faithful but SD will need to do more than chuck it up and hope #7 can box out the defender and make the catch. They have several extremely good athletes on that team and if they are able to get #4, #24, #5 or #18 in space then its a score more times than not. I think that Draft has a decent D that is really good sideline to sideline but I don't think they proved to me on Friday night that they can stop a power run team. Gap isn't that so it may not be an issue at all. Gap will try to use the deception of the single wing to show one thing while running something else to gain their advantage. I am not sure they have enough but I don't doubt that they will bring it for four quarters. I feel this has a chance to be a really good game and a way to right the ship so to speak for the still young Cougars.

As for some of our distant kin over in the Bull Run, I would think ER is closer now that the extremely talented RB for CC is out. The coaches son can sling it for sure but ER has quite a few players that can make plays as well. I would venture to say that they may pull this off convincingly to be honest an if so would likely take that trip to Buckingham and present a little different look to that team as well. Either way good luck to the Eagles as they attempt to knock off perineal contender Clarke County.

Luray is what they usually are. A gritty team with a big line that gets after you all night. The backs are quicker than they look on film so a second matchup with Draft would be intriguing to me personally. Like SD's game with the Gladiators, I do not think the game score was indicative of the game itself.

Page will be the barometer for the rest of Region B since they have played the majority of the other teams. Like others I look for a decisive Buckingham win but the margin and how competitive the Panthers are will at least be a partial gauge of what we can expect moving forward.

As for Spotswood, I don't know enough about them to comment other than to say that its hard for me to imagine a 10-0 team completely outclassed by a 4-6 Brookville. Not saying it cant or wont happen but Spotswood is a pretty dang good team. The early exit stigma will stay until they squash that themselves. This year is an opportunity to set things straight by making it to the round of 8. I doubt they advance past that but good luck to them.

And lastly, I know I shouldn't say this but I hope Brookville hangs 60 on RC. There are those teams that you kind of just root against and that is one for me.

I agree on the Luray game, things spiraled for them quickly the way the SD/RH game did.

Hopefully the Cougars get their mind right after this past week, as I don't see anything wrong with thinking this Gap game could be a dog fight.

I also agree that ER and CC will be a game, just providing the score from earlier. It looks like CC has had to adjust their offense since Mr Rutherford went down.

Great summary--Always enjoy your posts....However Clarke and Luray split the Bull Run title this year. Very competitive district

Albemarle is in the near vicinity and they are class 6. NBC29 covers both areas which I think makes them immediate areas.

Geographically you are correct but most people over here in the Valley would know little about them. The only reason I mentioned Western was because some of our Valley teams were in the same set of playoffs.

The Seminole is immensely better than the Valley. But, Rockbridge is playing at home and they earned the right to be there. Brookville may be the better more tested team, but Rockbridge should be motivated. I wouldn't count out the 'Cats. Their interior blocking has got to get better though.

I can’t be sure but he may mean that if two are clearly tied at the top, head to head is generally accepted as the tie break. If however there are three or more teams and there are round robin losses with each still having equal number of losses then it’s shared by all those with equal records. I have no dog in this just trying to interpret what I read in the comment.

Watch for the possibility of that "round robin" situation developing in our ACC Coastal Division race. Pitt beats Tech, then Tech beats UVa and there you have it!

I know what he meant, was calling him out for the participation trophy comment. Same type of comment was made a couple years ago when Clarke and Central (Woodstock) shared the district title. Central beat us that year but we both had the same district record. FWIW, I agree that the winner of the head to head in case of a tie should have the title outright, but I don't make the rules, just play by em, and if they say we share the title, then so be it.

The BRD has always recognized co-champs if two or more are tied. No tie-breakers for football regular season so CC and Luray are co-champs. Power points then decide region sending.

Madison and East Rock tied for the BRD volleyball regular season title. Power points was the tie breaker for district tourney seeding. Madison got the #1 seed but they are considered regular season co-champs. I understand that is also the format in basketball and baseball.
