I don’t even compare scores but the 1 seed in Region D lost to the 1 seed in Region B 55-21 and this is going to be worst. Thank God they are cross bracketing this thing.
And that is exactly why I made the post about eliminating regions altogether and just seeding the top 32 teams, March Madness style. But that's a different convo LOL...Region D was down this year in terms of talent. I'm not sure any of this year's versions of region D teams would have made the playoffs the last 2-5 years.

VA high school sports are 💩 compared to other states. Just the level of competition itself. Same teams playing every year. Cut out two classifications and you’d see the product improve tremendously.

I wouldn't say football is that bad. We do have 1-2 teams ranked top 100 every year, even if it is same teams. And Virginia had produced as many NFL players as California and Texas per capita. I do think restructuring the classifications would create more parity.

Reread what I said big dawg. Level of competition. It’s watered down due to the 6 classifications. No way should Phoebus get a free pass to the ship, Maury a free pass to the ship, Hayfield was gonna get a free pass to the ship, so will Graham in C2. Same teams every year.

I got you. I misunderstood what you meant. I do agree that the playoffs are watered down.

Ill agree Phoebus road has been easy with the teams in their path so far but Maury beat two good teams in Warwick and Kings Fork…

Yeah but we knew that neither team was beating them though. I think Hayfield, Varina, Phoebus and maybe Oscar Smith are the only teams in VA that could compete with them.

Fully agree with this. I'd personally like to go back to 3 classes.
The last few years that there were 3 classes, they split each into 2 divisions for the state tournament in basketball and football. They had 6 state tournament levels just like now, only grouped into 3 classes.

What would reducing the number of classes do, besides limiting the number of student athletes who would get to play in the state tournament?
So they reduce it to 3 classes
Combine 6&5, 4&3, 2&1 etc. You are still likely to get the same schools playing.
The argument has been made with 6 classes things are too watered down. Classes don't affect that. The total number of schools do. By combining classes theoretically class 3 schools outside of LCA may not be represented at all. Heck no class 1 schools would probably ever be seen playing in a state tournament.

So what's your solution, champ? You presented every reason as to why class reduction won't work but nothing more.

The solution to what? Having more competitive games? The solution is to realize that the competitive level of play between a class 2 school and a class 6 school is going to be different. Enjoy what you are watching and understand that a school with 500 students is not going to produce the athletes of a school with 1400 students.
If you want to see a higher level of competition then maybe schools like Phoebus should try to schedule far stronger out of district games. Maybe they should take on say a Bishop Gorman team out of Nevada etc.
To get to the competition level that you guys are discussing has nothing to do with classes, it would take a combining of athletics between schools. For example Combined Phoebus and Hamptons football teams. That's not going to happen

You realize Phoebus is in a 10 (soon to be 9) team district, yes? Historically that gave them one game to strengthen their schedule which they've done their best to take advantage of (Highland Springs, Dematha, Oscar Smith).

Personally, i think Bishop Gorman should be removed from NV HS sports. They are a wealthy powerhouse in a weak sports state. Why not go the route of IMG or St. Frances? I also get that people like to the champions of something.

Back to the case of Phoebus and strengthening their schedule - splitting the district in makes sense to me. Hampton "district" and Newport News "district". Play a couple "crossover" games and the rest be OOD.

Please understand I'm not knocking Phoebus in any way, or the schedule that they play, and I was only using them as an example because of the fact that they are so good. I'm just arguing the point that people on here seem to be complaining about the overall competition level of Virginia football and they are trying to say that reducing the classifications will fix the so called problem. I think the exact opposite. The classification keep the competition level higher in each classification. You should in theory get the two best class 1 teams playing each other in the state championship, and the reality is that the winner of that class 1 championship would probably not come close to beating even a mediocre class 6 school.

It does not matter how hard or easy Phoebus or Hampton's road to the championship has been. Their 4 peats mean they beat the other best in the state. Phoebus is going for an unprecedented 2nd 4-peat in less than 15 years. Hampton came within a overtime of 5 in a row. The 6 classifications have done to Va high school football what the portal and NIL has done to NCAA football. Watered it down so pathetically that 1-9 football teams qualifying for the playoffs. Everyone gets a trophy and Vanderbilt is now better than Alabama. Grill that at your next cookout

I totally agree that they should take fewer teams from each classification into the playoffs

Ahhhhhh but for the good old days of 1899-2000, When the Phoebus Phantoms were the Tiddly Winks champions of the Scottish Tiddly Winks league and Peninsula District homecoming fodder once losing a football game 72-6. Now they require a stronger schedule because? What winning doth do that losing cannot.

I don't think they need a stronger schedule. I was simply responding to those that stated the 6 classifications need to be gotten rid of because it waters down the competitiveness. I think Phoebus is unique in the fact that they could compete at the 4, 5 or 6A level, but I don't think there are many schools like that.

Sherando and Phoebus AD’s met yesterday and decided not to play this game stating it would be a waste of time.
What I heard was is that both State semi games are a waste of time, so they were just gonna let Phoebus play Varina this week for the state title and let Sherando and tusky play for 3rd place. Of course based on the commentary on here that would be a waste of time too, because there's no way Sherando could compete with Tusky either. They couldn't compete with Jefferson Forest or Salem either but due to two miracles that rival the immaculate conception and the birth of Christ himself they advanced

If they seeded how Texas does where once teams make the playoffs and are eligible, they go by how many students each school has and they draw distinctions in the lines of the eligible teams. Each team is seeded after that, but they still keep regional integrity. You could drop classifications or classes one or two and still yield a great product. Those higher classes you could break those into division one and two but ultimately because talent moves and cycles and swings predict who’s going to be good 10 years from now a program that hasn’t been successful might rise up out of the slums and great programs also fall off sometimes.

Think we're just behind the curve. Maybe we should just start cheering for an area code instead of a particular team, like some here do. That way when we talk up one of our teams and they fall flat on their face we can just pick another that hasn't been eliminated yet and belittle the ones who advanced. 540 has Salem, Sherando, Kettle Run, Handley, Lord Botetourt, William Fleming... the list goes on and on.

Though for real, if anyone is planning to make the trip down the game is set to start at 1pm, not 2pm as some on twitter were claiming.

For what it's worth. Salem had no chance of beating Phoebus. Good luck to Sherando. I don't see it being close at all. Varina will have their hands full with Tuscarora. Would not surprise me if the Huskies win.

Had an interesting thought and did a bit of research. Quite a "hangover" effect to playing Salem. The last eight teams to beat Salem in the playoffs outside of the title game have had their seasons ended the next week. Have to go back all the way to 2007 (and 2006) Amherst to find teams that won the following week and only one other team, 2001 Pulaski, has also had that success. That's a quarter century's worth of playoff games.

I ascribe no value to this, just found it interesting.
