High school notebook: Fleming's Stovall earns scholarship
ReadIn here and here and here 4 decks.

William Fleming had two boys basketball players sign a Division I scholarship last spring.

Score one for the girls.

Fleming's Salesse Stovall, a 6-foot-1 power forward/center, signed papers Wednesday with Marshall, becoming the first Timesland girl in the 2010 graduating class to earn a D-I grant-in-aid.

Stovall said she chose Marshall over offers from Stony Brook, North Carolina Central, UNC Greensboro and Maryland-Baltimore County.

Stovall said Marshall viewed her during open gymnasiums this fall after receiving her highlight tape.

"They called me two weeks ago and set up an official visit," the Fleming senior said. "We went up there last weekend. They sat down with us and said they would be sending me the papers to sign in the mail."

Stovall helped lead Fleming to a 13-10 record as junior. She also played for Team Virginia's 16-under Navy team that won two national tournaments this spring and summer under the direction of Randy Dunton, a former Liberty University men's head coach.

"She made a lot of progress playing in a system where the offense wasn't geared toward her," Fleming coach Champ Hubbard said. "That really helped her out a lot. Much respect goes to Randy Dunton."

Stovall spent three years at Roanoke Catholic and attended Franklin County briefly during her freshman year before transferring to Fleming.

Hubbard said Stovall is very capable of playing away from the basket at the next level.

"She has a perimeter game she hasn't used much yet," Hubbard said.
