The Skyline Hawks came back from a pair of 7-point deficits, one in each half, before pulling out a 29-28 overtime victory against the James Wood Colonels on Friday night at Skyline.

After a fumble on the opening kickoff to the Hawks, James Wood scored quickly on the short field on a 10 yard run by Tyler Bishop just 23 seconds into the game.

Skyline moved the ball well on the next series, with Dylan Hamman hooking up Ryan Abel for a 22 yard completion as well as Jay Roy for 21 more. The drive ended with a James Wood interception on 3rd and 10 from the Colonel 28.

Skyline’s defense played the Colonels tough on the next series, plus the Colonels made their own mistakes, with two false starts and a holding penalty. After the Hawks forced a punt, Skyline started their next series at their 33.

On 3rd and 10 from the 33, Hamman completed a pass to Ryan Abel, and combined with a 5 yard facemask, the Hawks had a first down at mid-field. After Hamman was sacked, and then a scramble that set up a 4th and 6, he found Jay Roy on a seven yard pass to keep the drive alive. James Wood then forced Skyline into another 4th down, but this time Hamman found Brandon Wells for a nine yard pass, that set the Hawks up with a first down at the Colonel 27. Hamman then hit Antwan Swain over the middle for seven yards to set up a 2nd and 3 from the 20. Hamman ran it in from 20 yards to get Skyline on the board, and A.J. Duweke’s kick tied it at 7-7 with 10:56 left in the 2nd quarter.

Skyline attempted an onside kick, but the Colonels recovered and started their series at their 39 yard line. On the first play, Tyler Bishop had a big gain deep into Hawk territory, but when he was brought down, he fumbled, and Keith Sanker recovered it for Skyline at their own 28.

Skyline and James Wood then traded 3 and outs, before Skyline started another drive at their 42. Brad Halsey was the workhorse of the next drive as he ran the ball four times and caught three passes on the drive. His last run was a 7 yard scoring run with 2:56 left in the first half. A.J. Duweke’s kick made it 14-7 Skyline. That was the score at the half.

James Wood was without star running back Tyler Bishop from late in the 2nd quarter through the end of the game. Keegan DeHaven took up much of the load for the Colonels in the 2nd half, but it was actually a run by Ryan Funkhouser that would have gone for a touchdown but was wiped out by holding, and the Colonels had to punt with their first possession of the 2nd half.

The Hawks started their next series at their 14, and were moving the ball, until Dylan Hamman was injured on a QB keeper with the Hawks at their 38. Hamman did not return in the game. After the Hawks punted, James Wood and Skyline traded 3 and outs again, but after the last Skyline punt, the Hawks got a good return and started their drive at the Hawk 21. DeHaven ran it in from 1 yard out to tied the score at 14 with 1:57 left in the 3rd quarter.

On the next series, Skyline got one first down, on an 11 yard run by replacement quarterback Ryan Scott, but were then forced to punt on the first play of the 4th quarter. James Wood took the lead on a 37 yard pass from Dade Carroll to Dillon Manuel, going up 21-14 with 9:09 left in the game.

After a kickoff return by Quinton Diggs started the Hawks off at the 41, Skyline needed just seven plays to tied it back up. Brad Halsey capped the drive with a 15 yard touchdown run, and the game was tied at 21 with 5:37 remaining.

Neither team could generate much in the next two series, but with under a minute left, James Wood moved the ball down to the Skyline 26, and with 9.4 seconds left attempted a 43 yard field goal. The kick was on target, but fell just short, and Skyline took a knee setting up overtime.

Skyline won the coin toss, and chose to go 2nd in the first overtime. James Wood was able to score on a Ryan Funkhouser four yard run, and kicked the extra point to go up 28-21, with Skyline’s turn in the first overtime remaining. On third and goal from the 2, Brad Halsey ran it in from 2 yards out. Skyline trailed 28-27, and chose to go for two instead of kicking the extra point to send it into double overtime. On the conversion attempt, Ryan Scott rolled left and found Aaron Tasker with the short throw to score the two points, and end the game with the final score of Skyline 29 James Wood 28. Brad Halsey had 74 yards rushing and 49 yards receiving on the night for the Hawks.

Skyline travels to Handley on Sat. October 24th.
