Stats credit to the Rapp Times newspaper - some stats to ponder about the Region A title battle Essex v Northumberland

Playoffs wins to get here - games at Essex and NHS

Essex over Northampton 46-26 (halftime Essex 24-20, Essex was down 2 TDs)
Essex over W&L 31-6 (halftime 0-0)

Northumberland over Colonial Beach 26-13 (halftime was CB 13-12, NHS was down 2 TDs)
Northumberland over West Point 31-26 (haltime NHS 19-12, NHS was down 2 TDs)

Which team will have a better start? Will it determine the outcome or will another comeback occur?

Since much talk has been made about the revamped Essex double wing offense, let's take a look...

Northampton at Essex - time of possession went to Northampton at 32 min + Essex at 15 +

Passing for Essex - one pass attempt - by Dameron for 16 yards which was a TD to Banks.

Rushing - Day 5 runs for 149 (2 TDs), Dameron 8-78 (scored four 2 point conversions) , Greene 9-56 (TD), Banks 5-41, Roane, 4-27 (TD), Byrd 1-12.

So 6 players are possibly getting the ball.

Essex v W&L - 5 players ran the ball, yet Dameron took over and had 3 TDs (20 runs for 138 yards) and two 2 point conversions. Banks and Green had some points.

Passing - big man Dameron had 3 passes - for 6 yards.

Essex D was tough and big.

Last game NHS QB Mason Adams threw for 229 yards and 3 TDs.

Palmer and Derrick Smith caught the TDs. Saunders and Kelly had big catches as well.

Palmer has had 603 yards of total offensive production the last two playoff games against excellent competition. That ain't nothing but bad a--.

West Point controlled the clock 35 plus min out of 48.

I wonder which team might have a slight better chance against the Machine......?

Speed kills and NHS has speed and a QB that can get it to his guys. They also have a coach that doesn’t play scared boring football. WP controlled the clock but it took them WAY too long to score. When they needed to score fast they had nothing. That’s the danger in a one dimensional ground attack.

Exactly.

Riverheads will control the clock and the game. No one can out Riverheads Riverheads.

There is only one team left that does not play that style...

Riverheads has to get by William Campbell 1st. WC was leading Riverheads last year 14-7 and was tied 14-14 at halftime. WC fumbled the 2nd half kick-off and things started snow balling from there. Otherwise may have turned out differently.

I'm going to suspect that Riverheads is better than they were last season. Sorry Region A folks, but Northumberland nor Essex is better than Essex or Sussex Central of a year ago.

As for Northumberland, it has already been a dream season. The Indians get a chance to play for the Region A title for the 1st time in 22 years.

This will be Essex's 14th time playing in this game in the last 18 years .

(if I counted them correctly).

Until this year, Essex defeated the Indians by like an average of like 30 points a game for 20+ plus years.

Great job to Coach Lewis and his boys and it ain't over yet!

Y’all guys give Riverheads way to much credit . Yes they are good but not unbeatable this hype train don’t know if it is reverse psychology or what we have got to get to the A/B game first

I can understand how it may feel that way to you guys. I can assure you that Riverheads and its coaching staff are highly respected.

No matter who wins this game between Essex and NHS, I am pretty sure no knowledgeable local sports fan would take either in a straight up bet against Riverheads (especially out West).

I would guess that they would want at least 14-17 points to take the bet. If other local folks disagree, please express your thoughts.

oh, and I definitely believe in upsets....nothing better.

That’s awesome man thanks for putting your season In Perspective. I remember back in the day Riverheads didn’t have winning season for 12 to 13 years and we got fortunate to get coach Casto and been on run ever since so hopefully y’all can have the same fortunes in years to come

WP penalties is what caused the delays in scoring. 9 penalties for 90 yards.
