Both teams have taken the field and the captains are at midfield. The 5A State Championship game is about to kickoff here at UVA with Tuscarora and L.C. Bird ready to duke it out for the title.

Tuscarora wins the toss and defers...The Skyhawks will receive to start the contest.

First Quarter

The Bird return man Daijuane Dorsey fumbles the opening kickoff and Tuscarora recovers at the Skyhawks 44 yard line.

Tuscarora takes to the ground with stud senior, Noah Reimers, and hands off 8 times to the running back, eventually scoring a touchdown at the 7:42 mark in the first quarter. The extra point by Finley Underhill makes it Tuscarora 7, L.C. Bird 0 early.

Bird takes possession and gets a 19 yard gain by Stephen Mines on their first play from scrimmage but the Huskies defense stiffens to force fourth and 2. The Skyhawks punt goes a whopping 14 yards and Tuscarora takes back over on offense. 5:42 remaining in the 1st quarter.

After the Skyhawks defense recovered a Reimers fumble, the teams' offense had their best opportunity so far today when they moved into Huskies territory with a pair of Tuscarora defensive penalties to assist them.

The Tuscarora defense tightened, however, forcing a turnover on downs when the Skyhawks attempted to convert on a fourth and one at the Huskies 21 yard line.

End of the 1st quarter: Tuscarora 7, L.C. Bird 0

Couple of Stats

Noah Reimers has 67 yards rushing on 11 carries with one touchdown for Tuscarora. Stephen Mines leads the Skyhawks on the ground with 34 yards on 8 carries.

Tyler Wilkins leads Bird with 3 tackles on defense and also has one reception for three yards. Jack Corso currently leads the Huskies defense with 2.5 tackles.

The Huskies didn't attempt a pass play during the opening quarter.

Second Quarter

The Huskies drive 79 yards after the defensive stand and score Noah Reimers scores his second rushing touchdown of the game with 8:43 left before halftime.

Reimers also comes up with a big pass reception during the drive. The first and only passing attempt in the game so far for Tuscarora.

A mistake on the extra point attempt and the Skyhawks stop the conversion....Tuscarora 13, L.C. Bird 0

Bird's offense takes over on the ensuing drive and the Huskies defense holds again. The Skyhawks need to come up with a big play to keep this from getting out of hand and maybe they do....a punt attempt hits a Huskies player. Bird recovers and the offense retakes the field at the Tuscarora 43 yard line, 1st and 10.

Stephen Mines leads the charge on the ground for Bird and after overcoming a pair of penalties, the Skyhawks are on the scoreboard following the turnover.

Mines goes in from 6 yards out on the ground and Keaton Riley's extra point makes it Tuscarora 13, L.C. Bird 7 with 6:44 remaining in the first half.

After starting at their own 20 yard line, Bird uses a 14 yard pass play from Jalen Elliott to Tyler Wilkins to convert a third down a pass attempt. A personal foul by Tuscarora extends the play and Elliott goes over the top to Wilkins for a 30 yard pass completion on the ensuing play.

Moments later, Mines drives his way into the endzone from six yards away and Bird takes their first lead of the contest with 1:52 remaining in the first half....L.C. Bird 14, Tuscarora 13.

The Huskies take to the air as they look to score before halftime and time winding down. Tuscararo completes a pair of passes and after avoiding pressure on another pass attempt, Daniel Smith heaves a 39 yard pass towards the endzone that Duron Norris pulls down for an easy touchdown reception with no Skyhawks in the vicinity .

The Huskies try the two point conversion but Reimers slips and Tuscarora takes a 19-14 lead into halftime over the defending 5A state champions.

Tuscarora will receive the kick to begin the second half.

DON'T GO ANYWHERE FOLKS!

Third Quarter

Defense has been the name so far.

First, the Skyhawks prevent Tuscarora from advancing after stopping a fourth down play by a fingernail. Then, Tuscarora answers the call on defense with a fourth down stop of their own.

Bird make the attempt by handing off to Stephen Mines but a Huskies player popped the ball loose and although the Skyhawks recovered, the drive was over.

The Skyhawks defense has seemed to find a bit of an answer to Reimers holding Tucsarora again on their second drive but the Bird offense has had difficulty moving the chains against the Huskies defense to this point. Just over 3 minutes remaining in the 3rd.

And just as I make that comment, Bird starts moving the ball, mostly on the ground, with JB Wright handling the rushing duties with Mines on the sideline nursing a minor injury that just occurred recently.

Bird has the ball at the Huskies 49 yard line. End of the Third quarter...Tuscarora 19, L.C. Bird 14
2nd and 13 when play resumes for the Skyhawks.

Stats through 3 quarters

Bird has taken the lead in rushing yards with 202 on 34 carries compared to the Huskies 141 on 29 attempts. The Skyhawks are also beginning to take over in TOP with 19:23 compared to 16:37.

Stephen Mines is the games leading rusher with 112 yards on 21 carries and JB Wright added 40 yards on 7 rushes in the third quarter. Reimers is at 110 for the Huskies but his YPC has declined as the game has progressed. He is currently at 4.6 per attempt.

Defensively, Rayshard Ashby has 8 tackles for Bird (2 TFL) and Isiah Moore has 6 tackles. Elijah Moore and Nichol Guiliano each have six for Tuscarora.

Fourth Quarter

L.C. Bird completes the drive that began late in the third quarter with a 32 yard touchdown toss from Jalen Elliott to Waymond Pate. Elliott then completes a toss to Tyler Wilkins for a two point conversion and Bird is on top of Tuscarora 22-19 with 10:22 remaining in the contest.

Tuscarora takes over with 10:14 remaining and facing a 4th-and-6, the Huskies make a gutsy call to go for it on their own 41. Daniel Smith completes a screen pass to Reimers who gains 7 yards. Tuscarora driving.

The Huskies make it to the Skyhawks 24 yard line but an incomplete pass on third down forces Tuscarora to attempt a conversion on 4th-and-9. The pass falls incomplete and the Skyhawks take over on downs, leading 22-19, with just over 5 minutes left on the game clock.

Tuscarora was able to get one more opportunity on offense as they tried to tie the game at the minimum. Facing 4th-and-7, the snap to Daniel Smith falls to the ground and Smith has difficulty scooping up the ball.

Finally, after gaining the handle, Smith rolls to his right and throws a pass to Nicolas Speroni. Ironically, as Speroni is coming down with the all, Daijuane Dorsey who fumbled the opening kickoff jars the ball loose and the pass falls incomplete.

Bird runs out the clock to earn their 3rd consecutive state championship trophy.

Re: Final Score: L.C. Bird 22, Tuscarora 19 (Stats)

Bird knows how to run the football. Skyhawks couldn't possibly have had 6 penalties for 99 yards. The longest penalty you can get is 15 yards. 6 x 15 = 90.
