Stone Bridge and Maury will tee it up at 4:30 on Saturday at ODU. Stone Bridge comes in at 14-0 while Maury is 8-1. Maury’s only loss was to New Bern, NC by 2 in their first game of the season. These teams met in 2019 in Hampton with Maury coming out victorious 28-21. By all accounts it looks like a great game on paper. Any thoughts on this game and what we might see?

I think a hard hitting fast paced game. Maury is definitely gonna establish the run then work to get their players out in space in pass and try to use their speed. And on defense I think they gonna play physical and definitely look to contain Thomas. And of course watch that wing. But overall I think we gonna have a good one.

New Bern is run heavy. They run a lot of option. Maury looked about as prepared for it as you could be early in the year. I think Stone Bridge will be tough for them, though, just based on the couple games I've seen.

I think playing Highland Springs in the semis will help Stone Bridge a lot. In the past (including 2019) they have had some championship games where the opponent was a big step up from what they had been facing, and they dug a big early hole before settling in and mounting a comeback that ultimately fell a little short.

Maury has definitely improved from that game especially dealing with teams that run wing and options also people gotta remember that NB was playing like their 3rd or 4th game and it was Maury first game. And also Maury had a lot of breaks this year due to scheduling and covid issues so I think this team is finally reaching its peak

Class 5 Virginia HS FB: Maury draws first blood. Payton Jones busts through the middle for a 2-yd. score. Taylor Moddy's XP makes it Maury 7, Stone Bridge 0 - 1Q 2:05.

Class 5 Championship Maury 14 Stone Bridge 13 - End 3rdQ

Every successful SB pass play, including tbe winning TD was due to the back side safety & corner letting their guard down..

Maury punting at the end of the game was a 50/50 call & could be debated into eternity.. But Maury got too conservative on their last few downs compared to how they moved the ball over the 50 yard line.

I watch this game too, it was a great game and an unbelievable ending!
Congrats to The Bulldogs!...
Gotta bring up a sore story...
Did y'all notice on every td for both teams there was celebrations in the end zone. Maury's last td, the guy spiked the ball, but no thought of a flag thrown!
Still feel HSHS got shorted up in NOVA last week!

JI Burton lost their chance to win a state title in the last moments when the officials called him for celebration bc he ran into the end zone pointing up, not at someone, pointing up! Hard to believe that was called and then today they're letting kids spike the ball.

FWIW I'm fine with a little celebration anyway they're kids, let them have fun and enjoy it as long as they're not taunting or showing up other team.

100% agree. HS did nothing that resembled taunting... Just excitement.
Anyway, it's now history and next year will be here before ya know it!

Stone Bridge most likely had a field goal at the end of that game. Let it go, Hs played a great game.

I was just looking a closer look at HS's schedule this year and the scores. HS finished 10-4. All 4 losses were by a total of 15 points. The first, Chambers, by 11 (24-13. Martinsburg by 1 (25-26). Varina by 1 (7-6). Stone Bridge (26-28).
Chambers lost today in NC State Title game.
Martinsburg, Varina and Stone Bridge were all State Champions this week.
We actually had a pretty good season even though 4 losses seems unusual for us but it really wasn't bad! We were loaded with 10th and 11th graders, a very young group.
I think next year HS is gonna be in the mix again...

Highland Springs will be in the mix for sure in 2022. In fact, they may even be the “early” preseason favorite in Class 5.

Jacob Thomas has now been involved in two of ESPN’s Sports Center Top 10 highlights in the same year as a high school athlete. Last spring, his walk off OT catch against Highland Springs was #1 and now his Hail Mary throw to win the title against Maury checks in at #10. How crazy is that? Big Man On Campus.

Congrats to all 6 State winners yesterday. I know as a high school football fan we are all praying for a full schedule for all teams next fall. A normal non-Covid year would be the biggest winner of them all in my book!

Stone Bridge was unusually small on the defensive side of the ball this year. Are they losing a lot? How’s the JV team?

Great observation. You are indeed correct on the size of the defense. That was my first and most glaring thing I noticed early in the season. Without looking, I believe there are just north of 20 seniors on the roster. The JV team was solid but there will be a number of holes to fill. I’m sure most teams can make the same argument though. True story, Coach Thompson had this 15-0 team pegged at 3-7 or 4-6 going into the season. After losing 25 seniors in the spring (10 who went on to play college ball, two at the Power 5 level), he was obviously concerned about a rebuild. Of course some of that is coach speak, but I don’t believe anyone within the program thought 15-0 was in the cards. Maybe the kids did.

I new the Maury game would be tight as strong offenses with size on the Oline (Freedom, Highland Springs) can move the ball consistently on the smaller D. Stone Bridges offense is gonna score their 28+ though, no matter how good the "D". I ask about Stone Bridge for selfish reasons. Woodgrove was extremely young and will be much better over the next 2-3 years. They gave Mountain View all they could handle. I'm hoping they can spike to the level where they challenge for Region D. They haven't been on that level since 2018. Congrats! My son and I were rooting for you guys, what a finish again!

What’s the story behind Stone Bridge’s coach telling Maury’s coach “F*** you” when Maury’s coach approached him after game?? Thompson was a great sport when we had our battles from 2007-2010. I just think it’s out of character to hear Maury’s coach tell us that postgame.

Thats definitely surprising to hear. If it's true makes you wonder if it was provoked.

I know who Mickey Thompson is. A legend. I have NO clue who coaches at Maury. That’s my take on that.

I think we may need to hear both sides of that from both coaches. I saw what Coach McCain said in his post game interview. Would like to hear Coach Thompson’s view or from anyone that was nearby on the field.

That’s cool and all but don’t discredit Dyrii and what he’s done. He’s only 32-33 and took a regular Norfolk program and has turned them into a state wide program. At his young age he’s already won a state title and sent kids big time. None of that was going on prior to him.

Certainly not discrediting him. One of the best young coaches in the state. They are a threat every year under his watch to hoist a trophy.

Maury in general has been a bit mouthy! They did it in the Spring to HS, then HS beat them 13-0 to advance to the Title game.
They did it again here on VaPreps before and about Green Run last week, calling them thugs and such.... Don't know why, but it is on this site.

You all know me by now and I love my Springers! So I tend to tell a little about us. We have about 20 seniors on our Varsity team. Only about 10 got on the field this year. HS is loaded with Sophomores and Juniors with some very interesting and talented Freshmen! Only a few Seniors are starters. Returning most of our studs next year. Our JV was 10-0. They had a strong offense, 2 stud freshman running backs and another good freshman qb. The defense was fast and furious. Several huge offensive linemen too. One of the large linemen is the little brother of NJ Jets' Mekhi Becton. 6'3- 6'4, 290 lbs. Freshman. Also Fairfield MS, HS's feeder was undefeated too.

Springer I would tend to think that HSHS would be the early favorite in Class 5. Lots of good teams out there, but that young roster is scary good. Hopefully I’m not putting the jinx on you guys. Have a healthy off season and hopefully our paths will cross again deep in the playoffs somewhere.
