Sussex at Lancaster

Interesting indeed.

I thought that Lancaster would be much improved. They have a strong 2nd year principal that supports both Academics and Athletics (vital component for success). I think he was a football star for Essex back in the day.

How much has Lancaster improved and how much has Sussex fallen?

14-14 OT

Dang, Sussex was a top 3 state team last year - LHS was way in last place in NND - 6th out of 6.

Not sure why game was played on what is usually a JV night.

Sussex won by 6 in OT.

Congrats to Sussex - they needed that. Great showing by LHS!

Hopefully, someone who was there will post some details.

Lancaster should have won but ran out of gas down the stretch. Sussex truly looks like a rebuilding team & not close to Top 10 at all.

Phone went dead during game.Great game Double OT Sussex with the win. Lancaster plays about 15 kids with about 8 on the sideline. Sussex is a 500 team & Lancaster will Finish with 2 or 3 wins this year. Sussex shouldn't be in the Top Ten.

Lancaster’s principal played Football, Baseball and I believe Basketball as well. Not 100% on Basketball. It’s been 31 years....gotta pull out the old yearbook to make sure lol. He’s a classmate of mine.

Sussex has not fallen , The Tigers are very young. The Tigers lineup is laced with Freshman and Sophomores, i mentioned back in June that 5 wins would be a great accomplishment this year, if they get a playoff berth they will be dangerous 1st rd draw for any team minus Riverheads and Essex. Dont stress the Tigers shall be contenders in 2019.

I'm pretty certain that the LHS principal played football and baseball at EHS. Don't believe he played basketball. Though he may have played soccer, but I believe back then soccer was a fall sport.

Yeah...That’s why I said I was not 100% sure about Basketball. I’m 100% certain he didn’t play Soccer because I played my Jr. & Sr. years and he was not on the team.

Just reached out to him. He said he made the Basketball team his Jr. year but decided not to play.

I agree. Their coach is a class act and works his tail off. They'll be ready come playoff time and the next few years will be solid again for Sussex.

The player you are speaking about was a three sport athlete that played football, soccer, and baseball at Essex in the 80s. He was a quarterback from 8-12th grade and a center midfielder for Coach Stanker 8-10th grade. He caught for the baseball team and Coach Ashton all 5 years as well.
His little brother Jason Gross was also a three sport star athlete having played football. basketball and baseball before graduating in ‘92. They both were first generation college goers as well, Butch at William and Mary and Jason at Longwood University. They married Middle Peninsula NN girls and both have athletic children that play/ played multiple sports at EHS and King William.
Butch is a career educator in his 16th month as principal at LHS and Jason is a combat decorated nurse. Larkin and Hannah Gross were all state athletes at EHS and Tristan Gross still plays sports for EHS. Larkin is a 2 time All American at MU and now a National Champ in golf. Hannah is attending UVA. Butch’s daughter Arria is now starring at KWHS in golf and she is involved in AFROTC at KWHS. Sheri Gross is a counselor at HHMS in KW and Angela Gross is a former decathlete from University of Maryland in her 4thor 5th as a successful principal at Tappahannock Elementary. For the record, Mr. Gross never actually played in a Varsity basketball game at EHS but he did in fact tryout for and make the team for Raymond Whittaker.

I knew he played soccer! Must've switched the sport from winter to fall in his junior year and that's why he didn't finish it out.

@EHS'87 Thanks for that post. @NNDman.. I didn’t even think about the JV years:). I was thinking varsity. That’s why I said he didn’t play soccer. I came along in my 11th & 12th grade years. In the 11th I played for Coach Stanker and my 12th was under Coach Herring. During my run, Soccer was a Fall sport. I’m gueesing that’s why principal Gross stopped Soccer because it was changed to the Fall when he played Football.
