Tre Ellis puts the pressure on the Titan's Tommy Deutsch resulting in a loss.

SUSSEX- Trinity Episcopal visited Sussex Central Friday night looking to have similar success as they had last season while working toward a 3-peat. The game started as if it was going to be a defensive struggle but the offenses came alive. Sussex Central marched down the field and speedster Trevon Hatch went in from 12-yards out to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead with 6:57 left in the first quarter.

Trinity drove the football well and tried to answer but fumbled at the Sussex 25-yard line with 2:27 left in the 1st. The Tigers would not be able to capitalize as the game changed into a field position battle in which Sussex punting game struggled with.

Tommy Deutsch for Trinity would connect on a few strikes moving the Titans down the short field putting them into scoring position. He would stroll to the pylon from 5-yards out making it a 7-6 Titans lead.

Sussex would have a drive interrupted with a tipped interception and the momentum was shifting to Trinity’s favor. Deutsch would waste no time and found Tink Boyd on a post pattern hitting him in stride as he would stroll in from 51 yards giving Trinity a 14-6 lead with 2:17 left until halftime.

The home squad would struggle with penalties that quickly destroyed their next drive and Trinity was trying to get big points right before the half. The Tiger defense stepped up and forced Will Michael to attempt a long field goal. The Tigers would get the block and senior Tre Ellis would race 55-yards down the home sideline for the touchdown. Clyde Edmonds would stretch his frame over the goal line for the 2-point conversion making it 14-14 at the half.

Trinity came into the second half dedicated to running the football. Several runs up the middle with Erin Scott set up a scoring opportunity and the fans that traveled from the Richmond area were excited. It would end when a topped ball with fall into the hands of Malik Delk spoiling the chance at points. Sussex would come back running hard.

Malik Delk makes a perfect read as Trevon Hatch goes for six points.

The Tigers would seem to wear down the bigger Titan defense and soon Hatch would find daylight and break loose for a 47-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up 20-14 with 3:49 left in the 3rd. Sussex will follow it up by stopping Trinity on downs and driving down the field methodically and ending it with a 3-yard plunge by Hatch making it 26-14 with 7:54 to play.

Sussex had played a solid 2nd half until they chose not to kick their signature pooch and kicked it right to Boyd who made them pay. Boyd set the Titans inside the Sussex 30 and a few plays later, a middle screen to Scott would convert easily for an 18-yard touchdown. The extra point never got off the ground as the score was 26-20 Tigers.

The Titans were able to stop the Tigers hurrying Delk in the pocket with blitzing linebackers. With no timeouts remaining, Trinity would start just over mid-field. Deutsch would hit Michael for a quick out, Scott would run the ball hard, and before anyone knew it Trinity was inside the Tiger 20. They would get no closer however.

Sussex Central held Trinity to a crucial 4th down and 20 from their own 21-yard line. Deutsch went for the game-winning pass on a post pattern they ran with Boyd in the first half. This time the ball sailed 2 feet above the stretched out fingers of Boyd and just like that Sussex Central had captured a big victory over the back-to back champs.

Trevon Hatch rushed for 161 yards and caught a 53-yard pass to go with his 3 touchdown runs to lead the Tigers.

Trinity’s Deutsch was held to 141 yards passing and 2 touchdowns and an interception on the night.
