Virginia High 53, (1A) Castlewood 12
Jada Campbell outscored Castlewood's entire team by herself -- finishing with 18 points -- as the Virginia High Bearcats pummeled the Blue Devils.
Maria Wilson added 10 points for the Bearcats. Eight of the 11 players on the roster scored for Virginia High.
"I'm hoping we can have some balanced scoring," said Virginia High coach Kevin Timmons. "I have a bunch of girls that can score. I just hope I have a bunch of girls that can defend."
Defense wasn't a problem against Castlewood.
The Blue Devils were scoreless in the first quarter and they didn't score until a putback by Brooke Banner with 4:54 remaining in the first half.
Hannah Ingle had four points to lead Castlewood.
Boys:
Lebanon 44, (1A) Castlewood 26
In a battle of Russell County rivals, Lebanon used a big first half to get by Castlewood.
The Pioneers dropped in four 3's in the first quarter to race out to an 18-8 advantage. Castlewood shot only 1 of 13 from the floor in the second quarter as Lebanon extended its lead to 31-11 by halftime.
"The first half we played pretty well," said Lebanon coach Brian Hooker. "The second half, we played as bad as we played good in the first half."
"We got the win, early in the season it's going to look rough sometimes. There were stretches we played well, but there were stretches we played really bad."
The second half was a struggle for both teams. Castlewood actually outscored Lebanon 15-13 the final 16 minutes.
Sophomore Sage Potts had a big night for Lebanon with a game high 23 points. He was the only player in double figures.
Zach Owens paced the Blue Devils with eight points.
Virginia High 54, (1A) Holston 48
Gavin Austin scored 13 points to lead four Virginia High scorers in double figures as the Bearcats won their first round game in the Ballard Lee Tip Off Classic.
Jake Johnston (11 points), Jordan Dixon (11 points) and Tauren Bizzell (10 points) also led the way for VHS.
Ben Hulbert led Holston with 19 points.
