Congrats to Tabb in a thriller as time runs out with the field goal to get the W 16-14 over the Islanders. This game was yet another thriller in the rivalry and decided right down at the wire. For Poquoson, some fans discussed this in the week and that was.....Tabb came to play. For Poquoson, I wrote about the importance of putting Tabb away EARLY before they started to believe, and this being a crucial thing for us to get the W. We did exactly opposite. We get the rock first and go down the field and score. Tabb gets the rock next, still in the first quarter and has to punt. And the two key things I wrote about for Poquoson in the first quarter that were critical were...…..no turnovers and absolutely must score touchdowns when deep inside Tabb territory. Well, we are up 7-0, and with our second possession, we turnover inside the Tabb 10 with a chance to go up 14-0, and likely from that point, the game would have probably been out of reach. Next, we hold Tabb and as they are punting, we get a piece of the punt, and then fumble on the run back, and Tabb recovers and they have first down!. We left 14 points on the field within about a 3 minute period there and I knew right there, the game was going down to the final moments. Sure enough, with Tabb being awarded the first down from our return on blocking their punt, they go down the field and score and tie it up 7-7. The difference in the game or turning point was exactly as I wrote about. Put the game away early when given the chance (and we had it) and not handing momentum to Tabb by not scoring TD's when deep in their territory early and not turning over early. We did those 2 and that wa it.
With roughly 6 minutes left in the game, we are up 14-13 and had a drive stall around the Tabb 24 as once again, we had a chance to put the game away and didn't do it. Tabb got the ball and drove nearly 76 yards down deep in our territory and kicked the field goal to win it. Credit Tabb for the win. They deserved it. We had our chances and refused to stop giving Tabb momentum. When Tabb had their chances, they capitalized and Tabb deserved to win. Other key differences was Tabb's inability to let us throw the rock (kind of-we dropped 3). We couldn't throw it or catch it, and for the most part, we were held to under 200 yards of total offense. Credit Tabb on a great win for them and hopefully the Bull Islanders learn from this one and understand that wins aren't going to be handed to them. I think our kids will learn and bounce back and be fine. Tabb, from about early 2nd quarter seized the momentum we had and started to believe. And believe, they certainly did. They finished! Congrats Tabb who deserved to win. No excuses here.
