For entertainment purposes, only!

What did the referee,on the field, closest to the play, with the best view call it? Did he consult with the next closest official, with the next best view of the play? I think they both agreed that control WAS established,in bounds, enough to be considered a completed catch! I know it’s for “entertainment purposes only”,but the 2 PROFESSIONALS closet to the actual action get paid to make that call. Had it been just 1 making the decision,I’d be in “some question”. However, the TWO agreed on the same observation, and agreed...CATCH! Great still photo btw! Should be a fun “argument” though! :)

Can’t wait til the return game next year!!

It's possible that the ref closest and right at the goal line didn't see the knee & elbow on the boundary line due to the Smith defender's body blocking his view. But live, it looked like most of his body was out of bounds as he pulled the ball in.

As fans, we color what we see based on who we root for. It's understandable bias and we know things don't always go our way. It's a life lesson.

My posting this picture is only done to illustrate for those that didn't attend, that the game was much closer than it has portrayed by others. As a Smith fan, I respect the outcome because the team dropped an intercepted pass in the endzone and they stopped their own success by committing penalties on virtually every one of their long plays. HS first TD was also extended by Smith penalties. The Springers capatilized on their opportunities and won the game. But the margin is a bit closer than the score.

Did he have possession before he fell to the ground? I know it was close, but the call stood. At this point in time, it was good. Ain't no going back and changing it.

You are 100% correct and biased does come in to factor. I just trust what they have to do as professionals, because I know there is no way in hell I could do their job. Plus,I am more satisfied, as I said, that not just one,but both of the officials agreed it was a catch, and they were only 2 feet away from it when it happened.

One thing is for certain, the rematch next year is going to be fun,and I hope it’s not the last one!

That picture shows the ball still falling into his hands as his body is on the boundary. It had been batted by both players as they fell to the ground.

Your right, the outcome is what it is. And live this IS understandably a reviewable play. But VHSL MAY decide to utilize it for the State Final game. If they choose not to then we have to accept the outcome of the game. It's an item out of our control and we can just have to debate it for our entertainment.

I know the Smith coaches are not letting the players focus on that one play. But it does seem to be motivating them to get better.

I’m not one that likes using different rules for the regular season and playoffs, but if it gets the call right then use it. My honest opinion, I think replay Hurts sports, because it really kills the flow of the game. To me it kills the teams momentum.

The fact that Reply COULD be available for a High School game is amazing in itself! I have my doubts if would actually happen. But IF there is a game that they should use it, the State Title game is it. Turn overs and scores make sense, but from there it does seem to be a fine line between getting a call right vs the flow if the game.

For me what's worse are the long breaks for TV commercials! Those ESPN games make it nearly unbearable with so many breaks in the game.

I know this is for entertainment but both of the kid's feet were in bounds. Yes his knee and elbow may have been out of bounds but his feet were in. Also, my coach always taught us one play does win or lose you the game. I am looking forward to next year and maybe Coach Johnson will choose to open up the playbook a little more.

I had a great view(w/ binoculars) and God's honest truth I said out loud no catch. But even if it wasn't a TD, HSHS defense was stout. OS wasnt going to score in the 2nd half regardless IMO.

HSHS also dropped a pass in the endzone that would've had them at the very least 13 pts still. I will say, if OS and HSHS played next week, I dont think the Springers win.

Why do you say that?! OS still couldn’t move the ball on a HSHS if they played tomorrow! 37 total yards in the second half for OS!

37 yards in the second half gives a picture of the Springers stopping nearly every drive with 2-3 yards per play and forcing the Tigers to punt or go for it. BUT reality was a bit different. The Tigers where in the game even up to their final drive.

Below is the excerpt from Matt's coverage of the game.

Oscar Smith runs for 3 with Keyvon King and then QB Ethan Vasko escapes the pocket for some solid yardage. Vasko gains 14.

But a penalty on the Tigers pushes them back 12 yards. They face 1st & 22 from their own 32. It's now 15 penalties for 132 yards tonight.

Keyvon King rushes for 6 yards to the Highland Springs 44. Some chippiness as a couple of players

QB Ethan Vasko of Smith finds Romon Copeland for a gain of 7 on a screen to move the chains. Vasko's next pass is incomplete, but then a holding - the 16th flag of the night on the Tigers - will prevent a long gainer as we tick down to 2:45 left in the ballgame

An 8-yard completion from Ethan Vasko to Amonte Jones puts Oscar Smith at the 39-yard line of Highland Springs, ticking under 2 minutes to go. It's 3rd & 12.

Vasko has a receiver that looks open for a minute and it's nearly picked off by Jabari Parker, breaking on the play down the middle of the field. Fourth down and the ballgame now.... 1:38 left.

That's pretty much how most of Smith's offensive series went throughout the night.

Again, I will humbly give my praises to the Springers for winning, BUT also suggest that Highland Springs had some help by our own player's high number of penalties. It's not unreasonable to believe that those nearly 150 yards of penalties tipped the scales in a 13-6 game, right?

Johnny Football saw another team vs I. River but at times we as fans feel like they have to beat a team twice to get the victory! They were better about the penalties on Saturday but to keep winning into December, they'll have to tighten things up considerably. Remember, this team is VERY young and they've come a long way under Coach Scott who's only been their coach since May!!???

This simply is not the same team that got beaten up vs I. River last year They were pushed around pretty good vs Ocean Lakes in the playoffs! They should have a much better outcome this year!

Don't discount the fact that this was the beginning of the season! As Oscar Smith is improving in their play, Highland Springs is too. The Springers did look at times, in it's first 2 games, to be somewhat ineffective to move the ball! Now.... the offense is clicking!I'm going to hold off on saying HS beats OS or vise versa, until Highland Springs plays Manchester, Colonial Forge and possibly an undefeated Varina team. These 3 teams are capable of playing HS and Oscar Smith tough.
Varina plays Lake Taylor this Friday, that will be interesting and probably fun to watch. HS has Manchester in 2 weeks, then 2 weeks later, Colonial Forge, 2 weeks later, Varina...( Does Smith close out their season close out their season with competition like this? I don't think so! Tough sledding ahead, but none of them have a defense like the Springers do.

I agree, the very best video was from WRIC Ch8 in Richmond. Somehow out of every sports video and game summaries, that game is nowhere to be found.

The video from WAVY 10 from down here has that annoying ticker scrolling at the bottom of the screen.

I saw a more polished unit against Indian River Saturday that's all. The defenses would be stingy and OS has the athletes to make A play.
Are you talking about the same Indian river team that lost to NC 2A northeastern? Oscar Smith will not see a better defense this entire year than the one Highland Springs put on the field. I don’t mean to be so negative but you got to give me more than Indian river especially when Highland Springs has the best offensive player and defensive player on the field.

Ummmmmm.....Varina is not undefeated! They lost opening game to Manchester in 2ots.

I agree about progress though. People are acting like only certain teams are improving as the season goes on. These kids already had skills, but now they have confidence and those two things combined are dangerous for anybody in any competition. The defense was already the best defense in the state, but now the offense is gaining confidence ,and quite honestly no longer has that JV mentality they had in the first couple of games of the year. They realize ,they have to do more than just show up and outscore people. The dangerous thing I see is, the only game the starting offense played the entire game was Oscar Smith, And he didn’t really cut them loose in that game. Now,you got a factor in,the starting running back is back.

I’m not going to go as far as seeing one team would beat the other, but I will say both teams have improved since that game.

early mornings and no coffee... I made my:) daily mistake early;)!
You are right, and I was at that game!
I think you get my drift, right?

And HS doesn't have the athletes. We didn't attack the middle of the field with pass until the second half and we our offense has looked unstoppable the last few weeks also. Special teams will still haunt OS where Laquan Veney has been a special teams nightmare for opposing teams. We were able to run and pass the ball on OS in the second half. Also we scored on them while playing a very vanilla offensive game. 23 qb keepers against OS. We would throw all on them now.

If HS win championship #5 then the Smith and HS game next year def. should be on ESPN. Both teams have def. gotten better since they have played. But lets not act like the Smith didnt give HS the the toughest game they have had since they played River 3 years ago in the semifinal game at HS. Its RESPECT for both programs. GOOD LUCK to both teams finishing out the regular season strong.

That's appreciated and I couldn't agree more. The amount of improvement by the Smith players from May, with Coach Scott's hiring, to this point has been exceptional. His staff is getting the most out a bunch of underclassmen. This year will be as good as they've had in a while. Next year should be better!

agreed! Smith was and will remain the toughest on the schedule!

Based on some of these comments, I think we need to start an "Excuse" thread. I've heard of a lot excuses on here and the national boards, like distance traveled, wrong time zone, players were out, somebody's mom forgot the orange slices, but I hadn't heard dialing back the offense in only one game to avoid showing their offense against the team that is likely the toughest they will face all year. Whether true or not, respect to HS for earning the win and respect to OS's defense for playing amazingly well with their backs against the wall. With another year under Coach Scott's system, OS should provide HS with a better test next year.

I agree and I know HSHS has a ton of athletes, I'm just saying OS has the athletes to make a play too which is what makes for a great game. I think the offense for HSHS has showed me a TON more since that game but to think you'd risk losing to a team because you don't want to "open up the playbook" is questionable IMO. If the coach's from the 75 were in the building or not they can still get game film or watch games on youtube. I'm not bashing HSHS and think they will win #5, i cant wait til next year when they face off again.

Like I said, both offenses looked like they were in preseason mode and if it was a game they played in the middle of the season it may not have gone the way it went in early September. Speculation is all, only time I've seen IR was this year and the OS game last year.

Actually that I river game was not tough. Our tough games were all Hermitage and bird playoff games, the Norview playoff game, and the second state championship game against Stone Bridge. I river game was over by halftime

Yea the Herm game in 2017 when they were down 14 early was the toughest I've seen.

Don't forget that Norview game 2016. HS only won by 3 and Norview had the ball going for a game winning drive but our defense rose ro the occasion. Also Herm 2015, herm came back from 35 down and HS won on a hook and ladder play Epic game

Even over Forge? Forge is loaded with seniors and will have the best QB you might see all year.
Forge already lost to Freedom(WB),and HSHS saw Freedom in their second scrimmage. Freedom had the best QB HSHS will see,and man o man they were big up front. Avalon had a terrific QB but his WR couldn’t get separation. Page QB had the same problem. Everyone seems to think Varina will give us our best game, but I don’t see that happening either.

Doesn’t get much better than the QB they see in practice every day to be honest.

That Freedom game was the type of game either team could've won. Freedom came from behind but won on a FG. Plus scrimmages are completely different from games. I agree Freedom is awesome, but the win over Forge doesn't mean much when it comes to specific matchups between Forge and HSHS. Also factor in the Forge kids will be completely amped up for that game. It should be a hell of a game.
