My Tigers will have to battle every week to arrive in Salem.

1. Middlesex will be very competitive this Friday night this will not be an easy game ( mark my word)

2. Colonial Beach ( no words needed) they have won in Sussex before!

3. Essex ( no words needed) I'm sure they are looking forward to the rematch

4. Riverhead ( The Tigers will have to show up in the foothills and do the impossible) !

It sure would be great to be in Region B just to eliminate one of these games !

To be the Best you have to beat the Best ! Hope to see a rematch of last year in Salem . Good luck to your Tigers !

In regards to the "weaker" Riverheads team that our buddy XCross refers to, I have to admit that I have had trouble this season deciding if that really is the case or not.

In most of the past years, when they have won the district or even when they didn't, it was either a runaway or only a two-horse race. For example, during the great "yes he did step out of bounds" caper (2014, was it?), it was Wilson that snatched the title away, but no one else was much of a challenge to them or to RHS.

Then last year, Stuarts Draft had its well-deserved banner year and took the Shenandoah with a perfect regular season. Again Riverheads was their only serious competition and they each went into the season finale at 9-0.

But here we are this year and it has been a totally different thing. There were actually six, count 'em, SIX quality teams in the Doah this year and on any given night you had to watch out for any one of them. Five are moving on to the playoffs and the sixth barely missed out.

As a result, the Gladiators have only averaged about 32 points per game last I calculated and were held to just one touchdown in each of their two losses. So does this really mean that Riverheads is weaker this year or does it simply mean that the district was tougher?

Sometimes when I watch them in action, I can see where X Cross is coming from and I do not see the dominant team we sometimes have. For example, there definitely was no Schaefer this season.

But then when I think about the depth at the running back position, the way we held Central to 35 points below their scoring average, the strength of our kicking game, and a defense that has only given up around 10 points per game, I think that yes, this really is or can be a contender at the 1-A level, especially considering that we beat some quality 2-A teams and were not exactly humiliated when we played 19-1 Lee and Central on the road on back-to-back Friday nights.

So it will be interesting to see how we do. If there is another championship in our future, will that mean that it was just another Riverheads year or will it be signs of a superior coaching job?

The Program at Riverheads is never weak, they have a high standard that kids accept ever year it's called Tradition!

Not much on the coaches ! The talent is sub par this year . They will grow up and be much better next year . Greenville keeps producing good talent . I will be shocked if they can win it all this year . If they loose I may move to BV . lmao

I think the poster meant an educated team as in one that has played against Riverheads and understands how their offense functions. I do not believe that he was being derogatory in his comments; just saying that once you play against their offense, you have better understanding of defending it.

89Charger I agree I don't think any malice or disrespect was intended, Sussex has a very good school system with great educational facilities and all schools fully accredited.

That was definitely the way I took it the first time...that he meant familiar with the opponent.

Besides, I think we have all gotten to know X Cross well enough to know that when he is offending or insulting someone, it is pretty clear!!!

Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense...but to be honest knowing it and stopping it is totally different! Sussex stopped several wing t offenses in the past. Luray was one of them and I think William Campbell ran a version of it. PM ran it when they had Dawson(I think that was his name). The major difference(other than execution) is the fact that Riverhead's lineman are allowed to be a yard or so in the backfield.

I was there...They ran their offense to perfection. Also they played solid D...much respect to Riverheads

The alignment thing has been discussed in another thread. The helmet no further back than the rear most part of the center. Being at a slight angle or further up on the line on one side than the other is well within the rules.

And I am glad you mentioned knowing it versus stopping it. I will guarantee that coach Dixon at Galax knows what to do and showed in 2015 how to stop it. He didn’t have the same athletes in 2016 and we were more successful against his team. It didn’t change what we did or even what he did to stop it. The kids playing changed and in the end every offensive play is designed to score, every defensive play is designed to stop the offense. Pretty simple really.
