Thursday’s Game (10/22/15):
Kecoughtan (3-4) at Heritage (2-5) . . . These two teams were expected to be higher in the Peninsula District pecking order at this point in the season, but both are below .500 after advancing in the playoffs a year ago. Heritage has won three in a row over Kecoughtan, doubling up the Warriors 26-13 in 2014. However, the Hurricanes are coming off a 32-21 loss to Gloucester that was their third straight defeat.
Canes QB Jeremiah Boyd (698Yds. 6TD’s) was benched a couple of games ago in favor of Chris Brown, but the Hurricanes have been a turnover-plagued offense this year as those two have combined for 10 interceptions on 134 pass attempts. Besides getting big plays from versatile speedster Jacione Fugate (698Yds. 6TD’s rushing), who scored four touchdowns of 40 yards or longer in a 35-12 rout of Warwick, the Warriors came up with five takeaways. One of them was on an interception by DT Tim Sanderlin.
Both teams have weapons at receiver that can pose problems for the other defense; Keith Grandy and Tyler Crist are dangerous for Kecoughtan while Heritage often turns to Amonyae Watson and Brandon Jones. Coach Young cautions that he smells a possible upset here, but the Hurricanes are going to have to run the ball better with Tra’Sean Shackleford, Roy Johnson III and company than they have in recent weeks to make it four straight over Kecoughtan.
