Tim Cromer steps down.

Is there lead candidates for the job? Is Christiansburg still a top tier job?

I don't know about potential candidates. IMO, I don't think C'burg would be considered a "top tier" job. Since they had the good fortune of having three or four consecutive classes packed with good/great athletes come through in 2010 - 2013, the Blue Demons' win total has declined sharply. They managed a combined total of three victories the past two seasons, and that includes sweating out a close one over Carroll Co., who went 0-28 in their four years in the district. Their varsity had no talent this season, and I've heard the same about the JV team.

C'burg's stadium is probably about average at best for a 3A stadium. I don't know about their weight room or other training facilities. I consider it a suburban/rural student body. I don't think the incoming coach can count on all that exceptional talent all showing up at once, as it did during the Demons' three-year reign as Region IV champions. Frankly, I think that was a fluke. Not the success, just all those kids coming through together. Ordinarily, a school of C'burg's size and in their setting might see that much talent in fifteen or twenty years. Perhaps most telling is the fact that C'burg's administration made a serious effort (which they ultimately abandoned) to drop to the Three Rivers District, which is comprised of almost all 2A and 1A schools. That might give an indication of where they feel the football program is headed. Or, maybe I'm reading too much into it and drawing the wrong assumption. Time will tell.

Given all that, I'm not sure Christiansburg would be viewed as a plum situation. It would definitely be a challenge. Of course, any young coach just getting started might view it as a good opportunity.

C-burg's 8th grade class is loaded and their sandlot program is in excellent shape. They will be down for a couple of years then the cycle begins again.

Just throwing some names out there of some semi-local guys that have been/are head coaches that could have interest:
Casey Steward, HC at Rural Retreat, was in Roanoke area for a while.
Shane Allen who just resigned from Tazewell.
Tom Hale, a few years removed from being the HC at Fort Chiswell.
Mathew Saunders, HC at Radford, were a little down may want to move up?
Eddie Sloss, HC at Carroll County, coached at Bburg and Cburg.
Jack Turner, 1 year out from being the HC at Auburn. Was at Pulaski before.

Could be a young guy. It will be interesting, I think someone could win there. Especially if 1bburgfan is correct about the MS and sandlot

My question is who WOULDN'T want this job? Cburg/Bburg is one of the nicest areas in VA, top 5. It is a very progressive area with the Amory in Radford, Tech and RU, beautiful/clean area, and low crime. Cburg is in one of the better districts in SWVA, don't know why in the heck they would want to move down. There are a lot of perks to this job. Talent may be down but if a coach with the right system comes in then they'd be competitive again.

Damn, does EVERYONE want in the TRD now? Well, everyone except Auburn and Eastern Montgomery, that is. They can't wait to get out.

Sorry to hijack the thread. Christiansburg's success was not just because of a good cycle of players. Cromer is a solid coach and solid man.

No, not just because of a good cycle of players. But having three or four consecutive years with more than one D1 prospect (and especially a Brenden Motley) on the roster was the biggest reason why the Blue Demons went from a 6-4-type team to winning 12 games two years in a row, and taking mighty Briar Woods to the wire in the state title game. Look at C'burg basketball. They were a complete non-factor before those guys all came through; they won Division 4 state basketball in 2012; and have now sunk back into obscurity.

Cromer's still the same man and coach, but the last two years have seen his teams go 2-8 and 1-9. I'm afraid the stable emptied out on him.

Coach Cromer is a good man and coach My cycle comment wasn't a slight at him. My point is without jimmys and joes it dont matter who is calling the Xs and Os. As for the coaching jobs in Mont Co. I don't think the pay scale is decent. And the county doesn't fund athletics very well, and then you have to compete with the maroon and orange monster for business support. Then you have to teach your classes , do offseason weight and conditioning and practices and then have time for your family. I bet if the coaches figured their hours and divided it by their coaching salary its less than 25 cents an hour. 90 % of the coaches coach for the love of the kids and the game. Thanks Coach Cromer for your time and love of the kids in Mont Co, Even if it was the dreaded Blue Demons
