In a game that was absolutely brutal in terms of weather (game time: 3 hours 28 minutes in 90+ heat) and that saw poor offensive execution by both teams, Unity Reed prevailed over Westfield by a score of 20-14. UR won the turnover battle, getting five to WF's one. Westfield's SO QB, Jenks, and his center had trouble all game long with errant snaps with Jenks fumbling five snaps, losing two. UR also caused him to fumble twice more when he was hit from the blindside on two pass attempts.

UR caught the WF secondary off guard on the second play of the game and scored on a Moore to Gibson 72 yard pass play to go ahead 6-0 (Eller's XP blocked). UR's next two possessions began deep in WF territory. The first was at the WF 22 yard line after UR's Pounds recovered a Jenks fumble, but UR failed to score and turned the ball over on downs. WF's Jenks fumbled again on the next WF possession, this time with UR's Eller recovering, and UR failed to score again and turned the ball over on downs at the WF 9 yard line. WF then went three and out, followed by a third failed UR 4th down attempt at the WF 28 yard line. WF would punt again, but UR fumbled the punt and WF's George recovered on the UR 31 yard line. WF then reached the UR 15 yard line before UR's Eller hit Jenks as he was throwing and UR's Morrison recovered the WF fumble on the UR 20 yard line. UR did not move the ball on this possession and punted. WF, starting at the UR 44 yard line, would score when WF's Ogando ran it in from 5 yards out to put WF ahead, 7-6, with 5:10 remaining in the half (Mattfeld XP). UR then failed to convert on another 4th down attempt, followed by a WF three and out, followed by another UR punt to take the teams to half time.

WF took the second half KO and quickly punted. UR then went on a drive from their own 25 yard line to the WF 5 yard line with first and goal, scoring on a 10 yard Green to Gibson pass to retake the lead at 12-7 with 4:50 left in the third quarter (2XP was no good). WF then reached the UR 35 yard line where they faced a 4th and 4 but the pass was incomplete. UR's Ferguson then ripped off a 64 yard run just a few plays later to the WF 6 yard line, following that up with a 6 yard TD run to put UR up 20-7 (2XP pass good, Green to Gibson) with 50 seconds left to play in the third quarter.

Note: The third quarter was almost an hour long. Players were cramping on almost every play, penalties flags were flying (all game, really), and lots of incomplete passes were thrown. At the conclusion of the quarter the trainers, school DSAs, coaches, and officials huddled to talk about stopping the game, but the coaches decided to play it out.

WF punted just after the fourth quarter started, followed by a UR three and out. The short punt and a good return put WF on the UR 27 yard line, and WF took advantage to score on a 6 yard Jenks run to pull within 20-14 (Mattfeld XP) with 7:38 to play. UR then failed to gain any yards from their own 20 yard line and lined up to punt again, but the snap was low and WF tackled the punter at the UR 7 yard line with a chance to go ahead. After three straight runs were stuffed, WF faced 4th and goal at the 4 yard line. WF's Jenks threw to St Germain in the end zone, but UR's Morrison stepped in front of the pass for an INT to preserve the UR lead. WF was able to force another UR three and out, getting the ball back on the UR 43 yard line with about 1:50 to play, but when rolling out to pass WF's Jenks was hit again on the blindside, fumbling, and UR's Eller recovered and advanced the ball all the way to the WF 25 yard line. UR then ran out the clock to seal the win.

I was there and have a SUNBURN to prove it. No shade, almost no breeze, direct sun, high humidity - "feels like" was about 100. I noted about 10 official timeouts in the third quarter alone for players cramped up and needing help off the field. And at least one member of the Westfield band passed out during the halftime show. The severe conditions, the lack of offensive execution and the plethora of defensive pass interference penalties will be my lasting memory of this one.

Couldn't make it through the third quarter. Props to those that stayed the whole game, hopefully you are enjoying some cold drinks.

Not going to count Westfield out, since they have had some teams that improved a lot during the season, but it looked like a rebuilding team.
