Despite all the bickering and BS, I think the current playoff system just works, at least up to the 3A level. All 3 games were awesome if you love to watch football. The only changes I would like to see is a reduction to the top 12 on each side, and I'd also like to see them play all the games in one place on a Saturday and Sunday. It sucks to have multiple games being played at the same time if you want to see more than one team.

I'm saying the current format does well at making sure the best teams in their respective division end up playing for the title. I think Vista and Essex were the best in 1A, Glenvar and WM best in 2A and Lafayette and MV best in 3A.

We could go to a 3 day option at the same site which for the VHSL would probably have to be Thursday-Friday-Saturday. If we did that I think it should be staggered like this. 1A-5A, 2A-4A, 3A-6A All games televised

To illustrate how it would go:

Thursday 5pm Altavista vs. Essex
8pm Tuscarora vs. L.C. Bird

Friday 6pm Glenvar vs. Wilson Memorial
9pm Salem vs. Lake Taylor

Saturday 1pm Magna Vista vs. Lafayette
7pm Centreville vs. Ocean Lakes

Of course folks would fuss about the early game. It would rotate from the 3 1A schools Tech-UVA-ODU. THe VHSL could move the game schedule how they see fit to maximize attendance based on travel.

The second option for scheduling would go like this:

Thursday: 7pm Tuscarora vs. L.C. Bird

Friday: 6pm Glenvar vs. Wilson Memorial
8:45 Magna Vista vs. Lafayette

Saturday: 1pm Altavista vs. Essex
4pm Salem vs. Lake Taylor
7pm Centreville vs. Ocean Lakes

Look how Texas 3-day system goes:

Not a good format

8 and 9 p.m. is entirely too late of a start time. Also ODU is not a good venue for championship games. Neither is Virginia Tech. I am a VT fan , but I have no desire to go to Lane Stadium for a high school championship game.

The ONLY PERFECT VENUE in the state for championship games is Liberty University. It is the most centrally located venue in the state suitable for championship games.

But I agree, all games should be scheduled so that fans can watch all 6.

I think they should all be televised without a charge in your respective state. Between the VHSL and the NFHS they could afford to air them at NO CHARGE!!!!! Which I know there is cost involved however that's why you have commercials. I mean this in ALL HS sports. I am also realistic knowing that would never happen.

LT is very, very good, however, they are not better than either of the 6A finalists. LT could compete in 6A and they probably would win 5A.

I'd rather it be a 2 day affair, but three would work. $10 for one game, $15 for a 1 day pass, $25 for a 2 day pass. The kids might get to play in front of 8-10,000 if all the schools' fans showed up for most of the games.

I'd have a room (or better yet a house on VRBO) reserved for next year already, and have already put in for a personal day from work. Rent me a real nice house on VRBO and invite all the people posting on Virginia Preps who aren't jerks to come to a pre game "tailgate" at the house the night before it all starts.

Man, I would be in heaven.

This is what I'd like to see. A 2 day affair on Saturday and Sunday. Games could start at 10-130-5. I would get a room and make a weekend out of it. It would make the road trip much more palatable. Rotate venues if you have to.

It's similar in Georgia. All six finals are played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Friday and Saturday, and all six games are televised on Georgia Public TV, thus everybody in the state can see the games.

The GPTV deal is very good. Having all the finals in the Dome, not so much. The 6A game might draw 35 or 40K, but that is because all eight 6A regions except the one in extreme south Georgia are in metro Atlanta. I frankly find the atmosphere to be extremely sterile. A lot of 1,2, and 3A schools don't have a large enough stadium to accommodate the crowd for a state final, but before they started playing these games in the Dome the state finals were played at a neighboring larger school's stadium, or maybe a college stadium like Georgia Southern or West Georgia. Usually a much better atmosphere than the Dome.

Sterile. That's a perfect word to describe the current state championship set up here in Virginia.

I mean, as a fan/parent/friend you cant even step foot on the field to celebrate with the team after the game (they announce this 40-50 times during each game).

The real kicker for me is the ~2 hour wait between games. Is that really necessary? As someone who goes as a neutral observer I'm left bored to death (and usually rather chilled to the bone) by the time the second game starts. And at Salem at least I'd kinda like to have more to eat than popcorn. Someone mentioned in another post that the VHSL should issue a Pass for these games. That could rectify the situation if you could get that pass and have the ability to LEAVE the stadium and come back. That two hour wait could be spent grubbing at a local restaurant.

Have yet to attend a VHSL state final this decade, but that seems crazy to not allow a handstamp situation where you can go eat a meal at a local restaurant, then return for the second game. Needs fixing for sure.
