In the below list you'll find our 757 area's top Seniors.

I think this list illustrates what has happened after the changes in the traditional top program's coaching positions over the last couple of years.

Noted are the concentration of players from Class 5, Maury & Indian River. Each program has enjoyed an unusually high number of transfers which allowed them to reach the State Semi-Finals and a first in 20 years, Southeastern District Title, respectfully.

Both teams will battle new Class 5 members, F. Cox and Woodside, along with the improved Nansemond River team come playoff time.

...and they all couldn't get past the semis because of that school in that small town in Eastern Henrico County! They've whipped all of them except Cox. Just because we haven't played them yet!

Maybe they should let these guys play as an all-star team to play Highland Springs! Quite honestly...probably the only chance any of them have of getting to the D5 title game!

Comments like this detract from the quality program Coach Johnson has built at HSHS. It’s like there’s never enough praise out there for some of these HSHS fans. Gotta make sure every thread worships HSHS at all times.

A little smack talk doesn't hurt anybody, unless they are very sensitive.
Detracting from Coach J's quality of program? ...No it doesn't! What he has done and continues to do is nothing shy of amazing, admirable and noteworthy!
Before he landed at HSHS, HS was right there! Yearly, 9-1, 8-2, 10-0! Couldn't seem to get over the "hump" in the playoffs! People talked about us like we weren't very good and would never get there! 11th season in front of Coach J!
In 10 years he took the program from "close, but not quite" to legitimate contender every year! 4 straight State Titles, 57-3 record (20-0 in the playoffs!) in these 4 years. This year they are the consensus favorite to make it 5. "IF" that should be the case, State records will fall.
I'm not claiming victory yet, we have to do it on the field for 15 straight games.
The Springers' fans might sound a little obnoxious to some of you, but we've earned the right to gloat a little bit! We have a long way to go to get that done, but we are very excited about what we have here!

Dude....it’s was meant as sarcasm....you know...a joke! The 757 is always blessed with NFL future level talent. The 804 is the same. Fact is...there’s a plethora of talent in the VA! Good luck to everyone!

Yea I see it and read it too. I played for Coach Dee and we NEVER acted like that (sarcasm or not). I remember when we(Phoebus players) went to a Hampton game and Mrs. Smith told us to watch our mouths, I spit at the ground and we walked off, the next MONTH I ran every practice. It's about respect and integrity, y'all on this board get ya rocks off about Notre Dame offers... NEVER played for a championship, prolly was in the band lol. Do better, humble champions get more respect.

The Champions are humble, them as players would never run their mouths to any other opposing team or anybody else for that matter.. I didn't play football at HSHS, I am a graduate there and a fan of the school, the program and everything it's about... I haven't said anything about anybody or anything derogatory about any team, players or coaches. I know you aren't talking about me personally in this post, it's HooSprings. I think he's just a fan too, I don't know who he is, really. Quite honestly, he didn't say anything about a person, team or coach either. "Maybe they should let these guys play as an all-star team to play Highland Springs! Quite honestly...probably the only chance any of them have of getting to the D5 title game!" I don't think it was derogatory at all, he knows just how good the 2019 Springers are!!

but you said, "I played for Coach Dee and we NEVER acted like that (sarcasm or not)" Maybe not, but your fans do!! I've seen it and read it too.
Best of luck through the year!
Oh, and the one you are referring to with the Notre Dame scholarship offer.... "never played in a Championship" he was the backup qb during the playoffs and he did get in a few plays!! So, he did play in a Championship!!! His videos, camps, time he's spent at ND (and they saw him running reps there), his Staight A 4.0 GPA is enough for ND to offer... I think the ND coaching staff knows what they are doing in South Bend!
He's also been offered by UNC, Pittsburgh, Tennessee. Texas A&M have shown interest.
There are about 20 others on this team that have some pretty big time offers too!

I'm in the wrong board I know, being my team is 3A school but I genuinely enjoy the speculation of 5 in a row and so forth, but when it becomes disrespectful to the other schools(combine and make an all star team) it's out of hand and takes away from what could be. Springer I want to see y'all do it, I LOVE the coaches from what I've seen on YouTube and what they're teaching. Best of luck this season, I'll be watching from a far.

Thanks and best of luck to you too. I've always wanted to see a match up between Phoebus and HSHS. Hampton and HSHS too. Gosh, back in the 70's, Hampton knocked the Springers out of the playoffs each time we were there, except the year Bethel beat us... of course, by my Preps name, I came out of HSHS in '76.

Let me reset my original intentions for this post. I could have stated things a bit clearer in that regard. After reading through the list in this morning's paper, this thought came to mind.

During the Richard Morgan tenure, Smith was like a vacuum, sucking up all the talent from the SouthEastern District. Their closest schools likely suffered this the most. I. River hadn't beaten the Tigers in about 20 years. Great Bridge has struggled to have a winning season in the same period. Smith has enjoyed transfers from Suffolk too.

Chris Scott is mostly famous for gathering kids from all over the 757 to play for him when he was at Ocean Lakes & Bishop Sullivan.

The outcome of those dramatic changes in coaching staff created a new kind of vacuum with new Coaches appearing and having their own impact on where kids gravitate to play. The result appears to be parity within the Southeastern District. I. River definitely is at a whole new level compared to past years, but other teams have improved too..

Now, looking back at those years, I see the same events occurring at Highland Springs. A talented Coaching staff is attracting the best-talented kids in Henrico Co. I sat amongst the Springers's at a recent scrimmage and the discussions about all the transfers were similar to those we've had within our fan base.

Lastly, IMHO, I believe it could be a while before another team has a run like Smith had down here in the 757 area mostly because of how diffuse the talent is.

Hoospring's comment about creating an all star team down here to compete against HSHS is painfully true. His team has accomplished that within Henrico Co.. It appears that at least in Class 5, that our area teams will have to attract more talent to topple them. We'll see about Smith in a couple of weeks. This isn't an all star team, but it could be one in the making. We first have to start attracking kids into the den instead of watching them leave!

I have hope, as a fan, because Coach Scott can game plan at a level comparable to Rich Morgan. Remember how Sullivan pushed IMG to the brink and almost pulled off a HUGE National impact upset! Respect is due for our competitors. They are formidable.

I’d actually be OK with the all-star team comment if there was ANY inkling of disrespect from any other fan base. There’s not. EVERYONE knows HSHS is legit and that there’s currently no match in VA C5 that we know of. To say it over and over again every post gets tiring. No need to defend what’s not under attack, y’know? Some of these old HSHS dudes just can’t help themselves & it starts to wear thin after a while.

You nailed it! You were at one of our scrimmages.... you could probably well see that HS is not an all star team either... There is a very good "core group" of kids that all came in at the same time as Freshmen. They all played together on the Varsity as Sophomores and won a title. Then again as Juniors. They are Seniors this year...That 1st string offense and defense is very tough and very experienced... That's what makes them so good right now... When you dig into the 2nd and 3rd string players, the experience and confidence levels drop of dramatically. For us, we will do well as long as that 1st and 2nd string teamers stay healthy.
1st string played sparingly during both scrimmages. Most of the "work" went to the youngster trying to "get there". Now, I predict that by mid-season and late-season, this will be a team to be reckoned with!

The feeder programs, as you know, are key to the direction of the Too Tier Team's. For the Beach Schools, wherever the VB Mustangs decide to play in High School will set the tone for the VB District. I believe Lake Taylor's kids mostly come from the Compestella Wolves program. For those State Championship Smith Team's, the 757Colts were responsible for their talent. It could be said that the majority of those kids are being pushed away from our Tiger's team lately.

I'm hoping the recent Coaching changes will keep the kids in South Norfolk.

I do like seeing success down there in the former "Eastern Region" and you are right! The feeder systems are the key!!! HS , Henrico and Varina are blessed with this in Eastern Henrico County!! The Sandston Jets, Highland Springs Saints and Glen Lea Lions (and a few more) dot the landscape around here.... These programs are strong and I know that our coaches keep close ties with all of them!! It's an excellent set up for the kids to excel in this area... It has been key to a lot of them eventually finding a ticket to an extended education in college!! It's exciting and wonderful for the community!!! I hope all of Virginia is or can be as blessed as we are here.

Yeah HSHS gets a few transfers but most of our players come from the springs area from feeder programs like Glen Lea and east end tigers and HS saints. Oh yeah we have our issues with players leaving to prep programs to. The best running back in the state transferred to LCA this year Dreshaun Taylor 6'1 240lbs junior. If he stayed at HSHS for the next two years it would not be fair all but guaranteed 5th straight title. LCA is doing up here in Richmond what bishop Sullivan did in 757 taking great players from public schools

Taylor has been back and forth. Fr year @ HS. Soph year @LCA, left mid year and back to HS. Now back at LCA again.
All we can do is wish him well. Even without Taylor, HS will get it done!

A bit of an update. Re: Smith's paucity of top 2020 Athletes. I guess I'm just out of touch with the team lately. As i observed the always entertaining Smith vs Salem (VB) scrimmage, it became clear to me that,

1. This team is very raw, young & talented. It's very much like the 2015 team which had 3 Senior All Tidwater Defense players transfer out. That team took Westfield to Triple OT in the State Finals.AND they played 15 games for 3 straight years!

So, I won't say that this team won't miss those guys, BUT it might be that the underclassmen were pressuring for playing time anyway! (Sushhhh, just Rumors).

2. There are a bunch of new faces. Coach Scott has kids who were not playing football last year on this team. Obviously not all will be impact players, but they're in HIS system and seem to be buying into the work required to make the team!

A few new faces that played elsewhere, too. All appear to be key contributors that could allow this team to meet its goals this year.

3. Coach Scott's coaching staff seems to have provided some focus and discipline for these kids. Some renewed enthusiasm along the sidelines is a welcome sight.

4. Don't ask me names and jersey numbers! Not a single person knew who was wearing what. I guess the coach had them all switch jerseys. I saw the same thing at a Highland Springs scrimmage. It must be a new thing to confuse the opponents scouts?

We still have our last scrimmage vs L.C. Bird next week on Thursday in Chesapeake.

Rumors, rumblings and gossip, no definitive truths but there appear to be whispers of problems with a couple of the new upcomers / Academy type schools.

I can't be too specific but let's just say that parents need to ask tough questions about their Academic success and the culture within the student, Athletic's living quarters!

I believe the grass is always greener where you grow it! That stuff on the other side of the fence might just be a mirage in a desert of despair.

@HooSprings & @springer76 I get the smack talk given the 804 v 757 talk of yesteryear and I know you based on your other posts meant that all in good fun.
@WP02alum & @SportsJunkie32 I get that smack talk might not have set well with you guys, but the board would be pretty boring if everybody went all "Bill Belichick press conference" on us. I might have hit those guys with a "Wow, really?" But you know they are enjoying the glow and warm fuzzies from a helluva run.
Besides, being from the east end what else do they have to be warm and fuzzy about. haha

Yep, that is what happens when a program is successful and has a coach with magnetism.

@HooSprings & @springer76 I heard from a referee that HS has 150 kids in the football program. True or inflated?

We had more girls try out for the girls JV volleyball team than players come out for JV football.
No word yet on whether we were able to pick up any of the volleyball cuts. LOL

Sure, I’m not curled up in a ball crying about it, but some of those dudes need to realize their audience on here. You’re not sippin on some drinks at a HSHS tailgate. Everyone here respects the hell out of Johnson & HS. Why would you want to detract from that as one of their fans? No one here needs those posts playing on repeat; that was my only point.

Also, that is a trifling comment about the east end. I love it out here.

I hear you and I understand how someone could be offended by the comment. Keeping it classy is always a good way to be.

I think both those guys know that I am from the East End. I grew up in Sandston and spent many Friday nights at Springer games growing up and traveling to playoff games. The loss to Annandale was particularly disappointing. Then they redrew the lines sending me to Varina.

Like all of us on here, I love high school football. I lived right behind Powhatan High School during the 90's glory days. The football team, the band, and the fans were awesome. Even if I wasn't at the game, I could tell by what the band played what was happening in the game.

My oldest son graduated from LC Bird the year they won their 2nd state title. I wish I could say the band, fans, and atmosphere were as good as Powhatan's. I felt like I was in the movie "Drumline" especially when they played HS or the city schools.

I've been through 4 years at Deep Run and beginning another 4 year run this year. And while the football has been good and bad, the student section and drumline have been raucous and entertaining making it a great atmosphere for high school football.

Bring on the season!

I didn't know you were from the East End!...
I remember when the redrew the lines. A lot of my friends that I went to Fairfield wound up at Varina too. I wonder if I knew or know you? I grew up and still live in Highland Springs and I love it here too. Bands and fans... I didn't play football in high school. I was in HS's marching band all 4 years @ HS and of course, I was at all games. I am actually a semi professional musician today! I was at that '78 Annandale game!
The atmosphere as you mentioned is electric at these games. HS's vand is a huge part of Highland Springs football games.
They throw a special celebration after the game WITH the football team! The team comes over right in front of the band as they play the school song, pumping their helmets in time in the air, with the band. It's a nice spectacle!
