VirginiaPreps.com's Preseason Top Ten Rankings

Speculation is over top 10 is released so who has comments or concerns? Anyone too high or too low?

I can find no arguments with this top ten. I thought Lafayette might be higher and by seasons end they may surely be higher.

While Hanover is not in the top ten, I would not be surprised to see them there at the end of this season. The Hawks return quite a bit of experience and this should be Coach Stoudt's best team in the three years he's been at the helm.

Honestly that 19-20 pod is going to be a dogfight with Hanover, Monacan, Courtland, Louisa, Hanover, and whoever else. Will be interesting as it will all come down to seedings and who is hosting who.

Devils, I don't know a lot about Powhatan going into this season but they are one of those 19-20 pod teams that are always there as well. Should make for a very entertaining playoff in 4A.

I have no problem with any of these rankings but I've learned one thing over the years. Schedule dictates a whole lot but VAPreps got it right. They went with the programs and threw some players in to raise and lower the field. At the end of the year, these will be close to correct rankings. IMO.

Two ways to look at rankings. As described by Shaunty about VP. And then based on VHSL points after the regular season. The later depends on your district way to much to be an accurate indicator. If you are a good, but smaller class team in a killer district with a lot of powerful larger schools, then your points are reflective. Only 4-5 wins and you still may be a top five team in your group going into the playoffs.

Agree with you and Devils. These two conferences seem to have a high number of quality teams this year. And Devils, how did you leave out Dinwiddie from your list!! I'm kidding, I know, too many to count! Let me add one more: Eastern View. I know they take some shots on this board but I think they are poised for another big season in 2015. SR QB Josh Stallings looked real good in 7-on-7 and SO ATH D'Ago Hunter is a serious threat. 9/18 @Sherando will be a good measuring stick. Let's start practice already!

I think this is a pretty solid top 10. Monacan had an awesome season last year but I think they are a little high and for a repeat season of last year I don't think that's going to happen. Sorry Coach Henderson we have nothing but love for you out here and I hope you prove me wrong.

I think Hanover is a top 10 team. That's a scary good team. I thought the days was over of seeing a Cheatham or Rogers on a Hanover sideline was over. Always well coached and ready for a challenge. Playing Highland Springs, Varina, Atlee, and Dinwiddie will have them ready for the playoffs which are going to make them a very tough out.

I agree. Pretty darn good first set of picks. Like you, Gen, I think Hanover is definitely a pre season top 10 team. And, I'm sure they are someone you don't want to meet early in the playoffs.

(I don't have a clue who I would drop to make room for them).

I'll differ with you on Monacan. Coach Henderson is very quickly being looked upon as one of the best coaches in the area. Last year was not a fluke just because a group of really good atheletes happened to be passing through. Coach knows the importance of establishing a comprehensive program. And that is exactly what he has done. I think we will see similar results again this season.

I'm sure the supporters of a few other teams would like to make an argument to be included in this initial top 10. I bet at least Powhatan, Louisa, Eastern View, and maybe King George would like to make this argument. I'm not sure about Conferences 17 and 18. I would suggest that Great Bridge, Churchland, Smithfield, and Heritage believe they belong.

One thing that has to be remembered is that these standings are based exclusively upon an assessment of each team's strengths and weaknesses in comparison to other 4a teams. The truth is, after the first game, it is all based upon VHSL points. And since the schedules run the gambit of teams across the six different group classification, only an assumption can be made about how good a team really is.

For instance, a team can end up 1-4 with a moderately good points total, based on who they played. Or they can be 1-4 and be in a deep hole with respect to points. But if this same team had to face off against top 4a opponents, i.e., the playoffs, they might be considered a top team.

So just have fun with what Rod has provided us. And don't get too boastful if your team is listed above the favorites of other posters. And don't react too harshly if your team was not listed, or placed below other teams that you "KNOW " are weaker than your team. Everything is based on information gathered, and information analyzed by a group of guys to the best of their ability. They ain't perfect. If they were, I assure you they would be out in Vegas laying down some serious dollars!

These rankings are just for fun and scheduling does matter somewhat but what happens on the field matters the most and Lake Taylor has the best players. I have to feign ignorance about Dinwiddie and replacing Shiheem Johnson , will take some doing as the QB position is as much a management job as well as talent and he was a big key to the Titans success but I will say that they have the opportunity to possibly be better than last year .

I'm interested in seeing what Chancellor will look like this year. I know they were young last season and took some lumps...but Oliver has some nice young talent

Here's a consensus of five different preseason rankings: consensus

According to the other 4 sources Liberty-Bealeton would be the most conspicuous team left out of this top 10. I'm with everyone else who posted here though. This ranking is as good as any out there, I'm sure.
