Re: See you all here next week , Lafayette 49 Petersburg 8
Although they had a great season, this had to be a devastating loss for the Little Giants. They held the lead for all but the final 11 seconds of the game before Western pulled it out.
Waynesboro came out firing and Chris Baker smoked three touchdown passes, each more impressive than the one before. But Western stayed within striking distance on a 64 yard run down the left sideline and more importantly scored on the very last play of the half. At the time, no one knew how important that score would be as the teams went into the locker room with Waynesboro ahead 21-14.
The Giants scored again to go up 28-14 but it was all Western after that. They closed to within 28-27 with 7:52 left but Waynesboro blocked the PAT to hold on to the lead. Waynesboro then drove into Western territory with under five minutes left and that is when the Warriors got their big break.
Waynesboro was facing a fourth down and 6 from the Western 38 and elected to go for it. Instead of making either the first down or at least a gain, the worst possible thing happened as Baker was sacked all the way out near midfield. That gave Western all the chance they needed as they drove in for the go-ahead score with just 11 seconds left. They went for two but it didn't matter that they missed it.
Kudos also to Waynesboro for their amazing crowd there today. For a while, it looked like they had the Warriors outnumbered about 5-1. A late-arriving crowd finally gave the home team a respectable showing, but the visitors still showed them how to fill up a sideline.
Great game and great season and Baker will be a force to be reckoned with next year. I am not sure who else might return with him since I am not that familiar with their roster.
