Last week of the regular season for Volleyball.

Region A -

1) Middlesex 16-1 (6.71)
2) Rappahannock 16-3 (6.37)
3) Northumberland 14-3 (5.94)
4) Lancaster 13-4 (lost to NHS)

Please tell me this is incorrect - according to what I am seeing - Chincoteague is 10-2 (who lost to a team 1-3 that Northumberland defeated fairly easily 3-0) has the highest Power Ranking in the Region!!!

Chincoteague somehow has a simplified power rating of 6.75 and is done for the season with 12 games.

Does this mean that powerhouses Middlesex and Rapp will be on the same side of the region bracket and one of them will be knocked out before states?

Both Rapp and Middlesex could win states this year.

Both teams would mop the floor with Chincoteague 3-0 easy. I have nothing against them but this is a freaking joke.

Every season this idiotic point system often puts weak teams at the top in many sports in Region A. Who runs this system? It needs to end. How embarrassing for poor Chincoteague and Region A and whoever is in charge.

My question is why is football on a different system than the other sports. Why not have them all on the same system. For the last couple of years at least in baseball/ softball, Chincoteague is ranked high and the low seed travels out there to slaughter them.

Whats happening more and more is coaches are figuring out ways to game the system and pile up points against weaker competition at a higher level. Honestly if you wanted to ensure a #1 seed in volleyball. For a 1A team simply play your district schedule and then look at historically bad teams in 2A and up and put those on your schedule even if it means playing all of your games away. You will be a high seed. On the other side of the coin, strong teams in the Neck and Tidewater beat each other up and squeak in as a lower seed, and then destroy teams outside of RIVAH country. There is still some volleyball to be played. I think Middlesex and Rappahannock will end up on opposite sides of the bracket. If not, it's a travesty that they don't have a chance to meet up in the finals.

I'm afraid Middlesex and Rappahannock are going to be in the same bracket. I actually don't know how you can fix this situation unless you start awarding points for defeated teams' victories like they do in football. But, I'm not certain that would solve it.

@NNDman, I would think the rider point system would help since the complaint was Chincoteague winning against inferior competition to inflate their record. At least that’s how I read it.

One advantage they have is that 6 of their district games are vs Class 2 teams. Their 3 district opponent s (they play 3 times for 9 games) have records of 7-13, 5-10, and 4-10

This issue comes up in the spring pretty much for all sports. Soccer saw 4 of the 5 best teams in the region in one bracket. Baseball I want to say had correct me if I’m wrong Rapp Northumberland and Lancaster in same bracket? Softball much of the same. So would be worth VHSL to look into. With the distance Northampton, Chincoteague, and Windsor are from the other schools their size and the lack of desire from larger schools to play them this problem won’t go away so it’s pretty much suck it up and win your playoff game. Can only be one state champ in the end anyways!

No offense to the ponies but, Good News if you're a 4/5/8 seed in the region 1A bracket. Your path to the State bracket just got a WHOLE lot easier if Middlesex and Rappahannock are indeed the 2/3 seeds. Any Indian fans out there?

This issue as others have stated happens every year in many sports, especially in the Spring as it determines the fate of several teams.

I have railed against this point system since it first was enacted as I knew it would hurt teams that played tougher competition.

You lose by one run v to an every year powerhouse 15-0 1A softball team you earn 0 points. You schedule and play an every year horrendous 0-15 2A team you get 8 points and so on.

With all schools required to enter scores in rschool now, it would not be that hard for one official sports person to compute the averages for each sport for each region school just like football does now.

Seeding does indeed change the possible region and eventual state championship outcomes.

If Rapp and Middlesex have to play before the Region championship, one will be knocked out and not make states. Once you get to states, one - that in itself is a great honor, two - anything can happen on a neutral court and either school could win it all.

Also, who gets to host this big game? The 2 seed right. Guess who will probably win this possible game? The Home team.....

If this game happens in the semis - it must be on a neutral court.

In the very least, all the referees all need to come from like the Riverheads area (Region B) and have never seen either team.
