I don't really have an issue with 16 from the west or the 12 from the east. Regions have always been able to allow whatever they voted on, going back to the 4 region setup. Same as will be going forward. I think there should be some discrepancy between the 4 regions with them being unbalanced. I think next year it would be largely unfair to Region A and D to only allow 4 teams in, while 4 fits Region B well. They can't allow 8 in because there won't be 8 teams playing football.
Back to this year, I have no problem with allowing more teams than is probably needed to get in. I think 12 is a good number but this is the first year since 2012 that there hasn't been a low seed win in the West.
2015- 9 Bland over 8 Patrick Henry
2014- 10 Covington over 7 Northwood, 11 Patrick Henry over 6 Clintwood, 12 Auburn over 5 Fort Chiswell
2013- 9 Galax over 8 GW, 10 Radford over 7 Holston, 12 JI Burton over 5 Clintwood, 13 Auburn over 4 Chilhowie.
The furthest of those lower seeds to advance was JI Burton in 2013, losing in the 3rd round after beating Auburn in the 2nd.
So yes, none of these teams are making it much further than getting one upset win. However, 1A is very cyclical for most teams (minus the top 4 or so from each side). I think allowing more teams in helps keep the competitive balance by getting kids out. If you area 6-4/7-3 team and you have no shot at post season play, kids wont come play and that team may fall to 3-7 without a few guys. Those teams up top have kids coming out, good coaching, and are able to maintain. I don't see the harm in having a few extra teams in, they can use that as a benchmark for their program, maybe they get an upset and stay alive one more week or maybe they are just a tune up for the top dogs before they move on.
And the VHSL is keeping it at 5 weeks of post season play (still up to the regions as to how many teams), most likely due to the gate from the extra 12 games you get by having the first round.
