This game saw a lot of hard hitting and good play on both sides of the ball for both teams, with the defenses of both teams leading the way most of the night. MAD also mixed in a hurry up offense on several drives that worked well for them.

Westfield received the opening kickoff and started on their 39 yard line. After WF's Kim hit Morin for a long pass play to the MAD 30 yard line, WF worked the ball down to the MAD 12 where they faced a 4th and 2 but the MAD defense stopped the run to take over on downs. MAD made little gain on their possession and punted after three plays. With a short field, WF started their second drive on the MAD 36 yard line but again failed to score, this time missing a 30 yard FG wide right and MAD took over on their own 20 yard line. On this MAD drive WF's Morin picked off Berry at the MAD 45 and returned the ball all the way down to the MAD 10 yard line. On the next play, MAD applied heavy pressure and forced WF's Kim out of the pocket, resulting in a desperation pass that was intercepted by MAD's Finney in the end zone to kill the WF drive. Shortly after MAD took over on the 20 yard line after the INT the first quarter ended, 0-0. MAD would again be forced to punt to start the second quarter but the punter fumbled the snap and had to scramble, in the process fumbling the ball with WF's Morin recovering on the MAD 5 yard line. This time WF made good, with Kim hitting Woodley on an 8 yard pass to put WF ahead 7-0 (Nugent XP) with 9:37 to play in the half. MAD returned the ensuing KO to their 36 yard line and then advanced all the way to the WF 35 yard line where they faced a 4th and 10. The MAD 4th down pass was completed but came up short and WF took over on downs on their own 27 yard line. Several plays later WF's Morin fumbled on the WF 32 yard line and MAD's Counts recovered the ball. MAD wasted no time, with Walker immediately bursting up the middle for a 32 yard TD run and with the Louden XP the score was tied, 7-7, with 5:23 to play in the half. WF's Morin then fielded the KO at the WF 5 yard line, cut back across the field, and raced down the MAD sideline all the way to the MAD 14 yard line. WF's Daniel then scored on a 6 yard run and WF was back in front, 14-7 (Nugent XP) with 4:56 to play in the half. Madison went three and out on their next possession, giving WF the ball on the WF 40 yard line with time winding down in the half. Failing to move the ball again, WF lined up to punt near midfield when two consecutive penalties pushed them back to the WF 40 yard line. WF then shanked the punt and MAD took over near midfield on their own 42 yard line. Berry immediately hit Finney with a 39 yard pass and MAD was threatening on the WF 11 yard line. However, MAD's Berry fumbled on the WF 20 yard line, with WF's Aguilar recovering, and WF was able to go into the locker room with a 14-7 halftime lead.

MAD received the second half KO at their 29 yard line, lost yardage, and punted-but shanked the kick and WF took over on the MAD 32 yard line. Facing a 4th and 1 at the MAD 23 yard line, Daniel got a 6 yard run to keep the drive alive but WF stalled and elected to kick a 33 yard FG (Nugent) which extended the lead to 17-7 with 6:38 to go in the 3rd quarter. MAD ended up punting on their next possession and WF took over on their own 24 yard line when the 3rd quarter ended with WF ahead 17-7. WF managed to drive on the first possession of the 4th quarter to the MAD 22 yard line, where the MAD defense stiffened again and forced WF into a 4th and 13 where the WF pass fell incomplete. With MAD now taking over on their own 22 yard line, they put together a 78 yard drive highlighted by a 42 yard Berry to Finney pass. They capped the drive with a 1 yard Berry QB sneak. Lining up to kick the XP, MAD instead had the holder throw a pass to a wide open Wysocki and with the 2XP MAD cut the lead to 17-15 with 8:24 remaining in the game. WF then marched from their own 36 yard line all the way to a first and goal at the MAD 3 yard line with time running down in the game. Needing a TD to probably secure the win, WF had a run go for no gain, a holding call push them back to the 11 yard line on 2nd down, then two incomplete passes. Facing 4th and goal from the 11 yard line WF attempted a 29 yard FG but the snap was bad. Although the kicker (Nugent) picked up the ball he was promptly downed by the MAD defense. With 2:43 to play, trailing by two points, MAD began their final drive on their own 20 yard line. Using mostly their hurry up offense and a long Berry to Finney pass on a scramble, they drove to the WF 35 yard line where they faced a 4th and 6. With the game on the line, WF's Ahiakpo broke through the MAD offensive line and sacked Berry to kill the drive. But MAD still had three time outs and used them to control the clock and force WF into a third and long with about 50 seconds to go. Needing a first down and facing third and long, WF's Asante got about 8 yards to just clear the down marker and WF was able to run out the clock for a very hard fought 17-15 win.

Great write up...this was a game that could have fallen either way. One thing I did notice is that Madison had a lot tackles for loss on Westfield backs and Noah Kim is deceptively quick, because Madison was after him in the backfield (...maybe more often than he had experienced so far this year). It will be very interesting to see how Centreville matches up against either team...

Agree with that-WF had a hard time controlling the MAD defense, and they were in the WF back field a lot. I will also add that WF's offense failed to score on their three opening drives, despite being in great position to do so. A lot of that was due to the MAD defense, but if WF had scored on at least two of those initial drives the game's complexion would have been totally different-but they didn't.
