This game was a heavyweight fight, with Westfield's offense doing just enough to win. Both defenses played well but WF's defense came out on top, getting quite a few more stops (stopping 5 of 7 SC 4th down attempts) and three turnovers.

South County started the game on their own 20 yard line and, true to form, faked a punt on 4th and 13 that WF stopped at midfield to get the ball. WF put together an all-run 50 yard drive, with Chung scoring on a 2 yard run to put WF up 7-0 at the 5:37 mark of the first quarter. On SC's next possession, WF's Free intercepted Saulisbury on the SC 39 yard line and returned the ball to the SC 29. WF's Johnson ran the ball to the SC 19 yard line but the drive stalled; WF's Delaney then missed a 31 yard FG wide left. SC started their next possession on their own 20 yard line again and moved the ball all the way to the WF 20 yard line where they faced a 4th and 6. The pass was incomplete and WF took over on their own 20 yard line. WF again drove the field, but stalled at the SC 32 yard line and Delaney missed a 44 yard FG, this time wide right. On their next possession SC faced another 4th down, 4th and 2 at the WF 49 yard line, and again failed to convert; WF took over on their own 47 yard line. After a WF punt, SC began their series on their own 20. Saulisbury promptly fumbled and WF's Free recovered on the SC 43 yard line. WF then went 3 and out, giving the ball back to SC on their own 19 yard line. SC would punt, and then WF ran out the half. The teams went int the locker room with WF leading 7-0.

WF punted on their first possession of the second half, then SC faced yet another 4th down, 4th and 1 at the WF 43, that the WF defense again stopped. After each team punted, a short SC punt deep in their own territory gave WF the ball on the SC 38. Johnson eventually scored on a 1 yard run to push the lead to 14-0 with 1:09 left in the third quarter. At this point SC put in McDaniels at QB and picked up the game's tempo even more. McDaniel hit Dunn on a 39 yard pass play to pull SC to within 14-7 at the 10:26 mark of the 4th quarter. WF's Hinton returned the ensuing kickoff to the SC 26, but WF again failed to move the ball and Delaney missed a 3rd FG, this time wide right from 44 yards. On SC's next possession and with time running down and trailing by 7 points, SC attempted three straight 4th downs on their next drive, converting the first two but failing on the third one, a 4th and 8 from the SC 44 yard line when WF's Free intercepted a long pass from Avery at the WF 23 yard line that he returned to the SC 40. Needing a score to put some distance between themselves and a quick strike SC team, WF's Delaney finally hit a 36 yard FG to put WF ahead, 17-7, with only 1:38 to play. SC was not done, as McDaniel promptly hit Dunn again, this time for a 73 yard scoring strike and SC pulled within 17-13 (XP missed) with 1:20 to go. SC went for the onside kick and Findley managed to recover the ball, but he touched it about a half yard short of the mandatory 10 yards it must travel and WF took over at the SC 49 yard line. With only one SC timeout left WF was able to run out the clock and take the win, 17-13.

Any comment on Westfield QB Rehman Johnson who was 1-of-14 passing for 13 yards and K Brian Delaney who missed 3 FG attempts. Thanks in advance.

The following is only my opinion. I don't profess to be a coach in any way, shape, or form (I only observe).

I don't know what was up with Delaney. He is easily the best kicker I have seen in NOVA since I have been in the area. In all honesty, of the three kicking disciplines (KO, FG, punt), I think FGs are his weakest area only because of the inaccuracy. All the kicks against SC were good as far as distance, height, snap, etc as far as I could tell; they were just off to the side by a foot or two. It is not like the kicks were shanked-they were just a bit off target. Keep in mind that they were also quite long for a high school kicker (31, 44, and 44 on the misses; 36 made), more than a lot of kids could even attempt.

As to Johnson's passing most of the passes were off target, mostly a bit short when he was passing on the run or under pressure in the pocket. WF was missing two starting linemen and that, coupled with the fact that SC has a decent defensive front seven themselves, meant he did not have a lot of time to set and throw. A few of the passes were also broken up by good plays on the part of the SC secondary. But whatever the reason, I don't believe the WF receivers or Johnson are as bad as the 1-14 stats say they are; plus SC is a good team and that certainly had something to do with it. That said, the passing game does need to improve and I think it will. WF has a history of improving in many phases of the game as the season goes along.
