In a game that was a bit on the sloppy side for both teams, Westfield managed to come out ahead in a game against West Potomac, 21-14.
West Potomac opened the game on their 24 yard line and punted after three plays, giving Westfield the ball on the WF 44 yard line. WF crossed midfield, then punted to pin WP deep in their own end at the WP 3 yard line. After moving the ball to their 46, WP lined up to punt but pressure by WF resulted in the WP punter being tackled at the WP 41, giving WF a short field. On the very next play WF's Asante went 41 yards to score the opening points and WF led 7-0 (Hildrup XP) with 3:08 remaining in the first quarter. WP started their next possession on their 30 yard line but went three and out, giving WF more good field position, this time at the WF 46 yard line. WF drove into the WP red zone, but then a 6 yard loss on 3rd down meant they faced 4th and goal from the WP 14 yard line. They elected to try a 31 yard Hildrup FG that came up short. WP took over on the 20 yard line and moved downfield to the WF 38 yard line where they faced a 4th and 9, but an incomplete pass gave the ball back to WF. On this drive WF moved the ball a bit better and ended the 62 yard drive with a 15 yard Kim to Woodley TD to extend their lead to 14-0 (Hildrup XP) with 1:23 to go in the half. WP next went three and out, giving WF the ball back with just under a minute left on the WF 41 yard line. WF managed to get down to the goal line, but Kim fumbled on a QB sneak from the 1 yard line (WP's Eason recovered) and shortly after the two teams went into the locker room with the score 14-0.
WF started the second half on their own 31 yard line and again moved down the field, reaching the WP 20 yard line where they elected to go for it on 4th and 9. After a holding call pushed the ball back to the WP 33 yard line, a second 4th down attempt failed when the pass was incomplete and WP took over on their own 33 yard line. WP ran three plays and lined up to punt, but decided to run a fake punt that was snuffed out by WF's Cockrill and WP turned over the ball to WF on their own 37 yard line. With an opportunity to strengthen the lead, WF's Asante was stripped of the ball on a short run and WP's Baidoo recovered on the WP 38 yard line. WP then struck for their first score on a 62 yard Jones to Webb pass and WP cut into the lead, 14-7 (Etheredge XP) with 6:12 remaining in the third quarter. WF's next drive also reached WP territory, helped by a 13 yard Kim run out of punt formation, but another Asante fumble on the WP 33 yard line was scooped up by WP's Johnson and returned all the way to the WF 19 yard line. WP wasted little time and scored on a 1 yard Jones run to even the score at 14 all (Etheredge XP) with 1:55 to play in the third quarter. Westfield would take the kickoff to their 39 yard line and advance the ball to the WP 44 yard line, but again faced a 4th down decision. Kim again lined up in punt formation on a 4th and 8 and again ran the fake, getting just enough for a first down to keep the drive alive. A few plays later Kim took it in from 1 yard out and WF regained the lead, 21-14 (Hildrup XP) with 9:29 remaining in the game. WP was pinned on the ensuing kickoff, only able to return the ball the their own 15 yard line, but got a 35 yard pass play from Jones to Webb to reach midfield. Several plays later they were at the WF 37 yard line and facing 4th and 8, but the pass bounced off the receiver's chest, incomplete. WF took over on their 37 yard line moving down field to the WP 26 yard line where they faced a 4th and 5. Electing to go for the first down and a potential game sealing score if they could get it, the play resulted in a sack and WP took over on the WP 38 yard line with 2:08 to play. WP was now running out of time, but this series consisted of a sack, an incomplete pass, another sack, and an incomplete pass on 4th and 17. WF was then able to run out the clock.
