The South County Stallions traveled to Westfield to take on the Bulldogs in a tight game. Although there were a few glimpses of offense in the first half, the defenses were just a bit better and SC took a 6-3 lead into the locker room. WF came out and scored on the first drive of the second half before the game was halted by lightning with 6:25 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
South County opened the game with a good KO return to their own 48 yard line, then moved deep into WF territory where they converted a 4th and inches at the WF 21 yard line. Shortly after, Dzierski hit Sheffield with a 12 yard TD pass and SC led, 6-0 (Ramirez XP blocked by WF’s Hinton) with 9:34 to go in the 1st quarter. After a WF punt put SC inside their own 20 yard line, SC gained about 25 yards before punting the ball back and WF started their next drive on their own 20 yard line. WF drove to the SC 24 but lost ground on the next three plays and found themselves facing a 4th and 19 at the SC 33 yard line. Electing to go for it, Kim rolled out to his left then threw back across the field to a wide open Daniels who picked up 26 yards to the SC 7 yard line. After an Asante run that was ruled down a foot from the goal line WF was flagged for illegal procedure and pushed back to just outside the SC 5 yard line. WF ended up getting a 22 yard Nugent FG and narrowed the SC lead to 6-3 with 8:26 to play in the half. SC started their next drive on their own 22 yard line and moved all the way to the WF 25 yard line where they faced a 4th and 7. Despite completing the pass on 4th down SC came up a few inches short and turned the ball over on downs at the WF 18 yard line. On each of their next possessions the teams both went three and out and the half ended with SC ahead, 6-3.
WF received the ball to start the second half with Kiley returning the KO to the WF 46 yard line. WF quickly marched 54 yards down the field in six plays, using five passes to Woodley and a Kim run, capping the drive with a 7 yard passing TD from Kim to Woodley. After a Nugent XP, WF lead 10-6 with 9:11 remaining in the 3rd quarter. SC did not move the ball on their next possession, and after a SC punt near midfield WF took over on their own 38 yard line, advancing to the WF 44 yard line before the game was halted with 6:25 to play in the 3rd quarter.
When the game resumed Saturday morning WF faced a 2nd and 5 at their own 44 yard line. They quickly moved down the field and scored in less than 2 minutes, with Kim hitting Woodley for a 12 yard passing TD and WF extended their lead to 17-6 (Nugent XP) with 4:46 remaining in the 3rd quarter. SC went three and out on their next possession, but a short punt gave WF the ball on the SC 37 yard line. On the very first play of this drive Kim hit Woodley with a 37 yard flea flicker TD pass and WF extended the lead further, to 24-6 (Nugent XP) with 3:08 to go in the 3rd quarter. SC received the ensuing KO and started at their own 26 yard line. After two short runs, SC’s Dzierski was called for intentional grounding in a controversial play (he was hit on the arm as he threw) and SC was forced to punt from their own 18 yard line. At this point, most felt the momentum was solidly in WF’s favor. But wait….WF’s Morin elected to field the SC punt and SC pressure caused him to muff the catch, with SC recovering on the WF 46 yard line. A handful of plays later Dzierski hit a wide open Spalding down the sideline for an easy 37 yard TD catch. SC chose to go for a 2XP play that was stopped just short of the goal line and the score was now 24-12, WF, with 11:53 to play in the game. SC executed an onside kick on the KO and it was recovered by SC’s Toran on the WF 38 yard line. With the SC sideline now fired up, SC had a chance to make it a one score game. They advanced to the WF 12 yard line where they faced a 4th and goal, but the pass attempt fell incomplete and WF took over. WF promptly went three and out, with SC getting the ball back on their own 37 yard line. They again advanced into WF territory, this time to the WF 24 yard line, but again faced a 4th down situation. Facing 4th and 3, WF pressure caused the pass to fall incomplete and WF took over on their own 12 yard line with less than 6 minutes to play. Unable to move the ball, WF was again forced to punt and a short punt gave SC the ball at their own 49 yard line with about 3 minutes to go. On this drive SC would again face a 4th down, this time 4th and long at the WF 26 yard line after a sack, and the pass again fell incomplete. WF then ran out the clock for a 24-12 win.
