Before I begin the game run down I have to give props to Marshall. They are a very good football team and their main RB, Nakia Wilson, is exceptional and one of the best I have seen in the past few years. He is fast, runs very hard, gets multiple yards after contact, and did everything he could to give Marshall a chance to win. I did not track his yards but he had a lot (150-200?) and accounted for probably 75% of Marshall's offense. Marshall is a playoff team for sure.

Marshall took the opening KO and went three and out, punting to WF at the WF 30 yard line. WF's Davis then fumbled near the home sideline on a pass play and MAR's Proctor recovered at the WF 40 yard line. Advancing to the WF 8 yard line, MAR faced a 4th and 3 and Wilson scored on an 8 yard run to put MAR in front, 7-0 (Lenert XP) with 3:37 to play in the first quarter. WF took the KO return to their own 47 yard line then executed a 53 yard drive to score when Jenks found Ogando for a 23 yard passing TD to even the score at 7-7 (Mattfeld XP) with 11:51 to play in the half. MAR's next possession was a three and out, but the punt pinned WF deep in their own half at the WF 15 yard line. This WF drive ended with a punt after only getting one first down and 23 yards. The WF punt rolled to the MAR 17 yard line to switch the field position, but MAR went to work and quickly reached the WF 14 yard line behind two big plays, a 48 yard run by Stewart and a 16 yard Ryder to Wilson pass, then an 8 yard Wilson run had MAR on the WF 6 yard line facing 2nd and 2. On the next play a holding call pushed MAR back to the WF 26 yard line and MAR soon faced a 4th and 22 at the WF 26 yard line. MAR elected to go for it and the pass fell incomplete. WF then went about 40 yards but could not get close enough to try a FG and the half ended 7-7.

WF took the second half KO and ended up punting after reaching the WF 47 yard line, putting MAR on their own 24 yard line. MAR then punted the ball back to WF, with WF's Anderson getting a good return to put WF in MAR territory at the MAR 44 yard line. WF's Nelson later scored on a 26 yard run to put WF in front, 13-7 (Mattfeld XP missed) with 3:57 remaining in the third quarter. MAR's next drive reached the WF 29 yard line where they faced a 4th and 4, but MAR scored on the play when Ryder found Emory in the middle of the field and he weaved his way to the end zone. WF's Thomas blocked Lenert's XP attempt and the score was again tied, 13-13 with 9:47 remaining in the game. On the ensuing KO WF's Wetsel was stripped on the tackle and MAR's #50 recovered (his name is not listed on my roster) to give MAR the ball on the WF 39 yard line. MAR took advantage of the opportunity to get back to back scores, scoring on a nine yard run by Wilson around the left side on 4th and three from the WF 9 yard line. After Lenert's XP, MAR was ahead 20-13 with 6:12 remaining in the game. WF got the ball back on the WF 36 yard line with about 6 minutes and needing a score to even the game. On this drive Jenks found Davis on a 28 yard pass to the MAR 18 yard line, but a facemask penalty on the play pushed the ball to the MAR 9 yard line. WF's Nelson then scored on a 5 yard run to pull WF within 20-19, but after being flagged for the celebration WF faced a 35 yard XP for the tie. Mattfeld's long XP was good and the score was tied at 20-20 with 1:11 remaining. MAR managed to reach the WF 30 yard line on their quick drive but could not score and the game went to OT.

MAR went on offense first in OT and went right to RB Wilson, who was successful all game long. Wilson was stopped after gaining only one yard on each of two consecutive plays, so MAR decided to attempt a pass on 3rd down. On this play MAR's Ryder scrambled to his left and managed to get off a pass that was just over the receiver's head in the back of the end zone for an incomplete pass. MAR then lined up to attempt a 24 yard FG from the right hash, but Lenert's attempt missed wide left, opening the door for WF. The WF offense then used a 5 yard run by Jenks to reach just short of the 5 yard line, where on the next play WF's Nelson ran it up the middle for the winning score and WF escaped with the 26-20 win.
