Westfield-Centreville is a big rivalry game and emotion can run high just like in any rivalry game. Perhaps that is why the game started slow, with WF turning the ball over on a fumble on their first drive and CV missing out on three early TD opportunities: a PI call on WF that prevented the TD pass from being completed, an open CV receiver where the pass went through his hands, and a CV TD pass called back for holding. All of this resulted in a scoreless first quarter until the teams settled into the game in the second quarter, when WF began to slowly dominate and eventually WF came away with a 27-11 victory.

CV started the game with the ball on their own 17 yard line and went three and out, giving WF great field position on the CV 48 yard line. On the second play, WF’s Asante fumbled the ball and CV’s Edmonds recovered on the CV 30 yard line, but a personal foul on WF allowed CV to start the drive on their 45 yard line. They moved down to the WF 18 yard line where they faced a 4th and 3, but a false start made it 4th and 8, then the CV pass only gained three yards and WF took over on their own 23 yard line. Unable to move the ball WF went three and out; CV started their next possession on their own 23 yard line (the first quarter ended scoreless shortly after). Early in the second quarter CV got a 44 yard Egbers to Anunay passing TD (called back for holding, with a celebration penalty tacked on) and the resulting down was 3rd and 41. CV could not get out of that big of a hole and punted, giving WF the ball on the WF 23. WF promptly went three and out again; then CV returned the favor. WF started their next possession on the WF 29 yard line and marched the 71 yards to cap the drive with a 2 yard Kim run to put WF in front, 7-0 (Nugent XP) with 6:15 remaining in the half. After a facemask penalty on WF on the ensuing kickoff, CV had good field position on their own 44 yard line. CV’s Anunay caught a 40 yard pass down the middle to help get CV to the WF 19 yard line, where CV had to settle for a 31 yard FG by Greer to cut the lead to 7-3 with 2:20 to go in the half. WF managed to get down to the CV 13 yard line before the half ended, but a 31 yard Nugent FG try was missed and the teams went into the locker rooms with WF ahead 7-3.

WF started the second half on their own 14 yard line, and on the third play Kim hit Kiley on an 86 yard TD pass and WF extended their lead to 14-3 (Nugent XP) just 35 seconds into the second half. On CV’s next possession, Anunay fumbled on the WF 30 yard line and WF recovered at their own 37 to stop the CV drive. Kim soon found Woodley on a short pass where Woodley broke away from the defender and went 58 yards for the score, extending the lead to 20-3 (Nugent XP hit the upright) with 5:42 remaining in the third quarter. CV’s next possession was a three and out which gave WF the ball near midfield. WF again took advantage, going 51 yards and capping the drive with a 10 yard Asante run to extend the WF lead to 27-3 with 1:01 to play in the third quarter. CV’s next possession began on their own 42 yard line. After crossing midfield, Egbers was intercepted but the play was wiped out by a roughing the passer penalty. CV took advantage of the new opportunity and finished the drive with a 12 yard Egbers TD run to cut the lead to 27-11 (2XP, Egbers pass to Maxwell) with 8:25 to play. WF went three and out on the following possession, as did CV, then WF put together a long, time consuming drive that reached the CV 3 yard line before they turned the ball over on downs with less than a minute to go in the game. The game ended 27-11, Westfield.

Great win and way to keep pace with Freedom and CF up there.

Did I see correctly that Stone bridge score last night?

falcettik,
Great write up as always.
2 questions which is really just one.
Which team wins Madison at Centreville?
OR which team would you prefer to face again, because it seems probable.

With two weeks left it is still a bit complicated to calculate the expected outcomes and resulting seedings, but you have to consider this: If Marshall holds on to the #2 it is possible WF will have to face both of them again. To answer your question, I think that based on what I saw from WF's two games against MAD and CV, I would give MAD the edge in the MAD-CV game the final week of the regular season. MAD plays a very similar game to WF's and CV struggled, overall, with that style last night. After next week we will have a much clearer picture but I would not be surprised to see the top 5 be WF-MAR-MAD-SL-CV (in that order, assuming MAD over CV). That plays directly into WF potentially facing one or both of MAD and CV.

My 2 cents. Having seen Madison and Centreville twice I think Madison will get the win. The difference in my mind is Madison has the better defense. Beating either of those teams a second time will not be an easy task - but Madison certainly gave Westfield's offense a lot more trouble than Centreville did.

That was Westfield QB Noah Kim's best game of the season. He threw for 277 yards and 2 TDs against Centreville. Last week, he threw for 238 yards and 4 TDs against Oakton.
