Westfield and Lake Braddock opened their seasons tonight, with Westfield pulling away from the Bruins to win, 28-10, in a sloppy game. Neither team was sharp and WF killed more drives than I care to recall with penalties-the Bulldogs probably racked up somewhere in the range of 150-200 yards in penalties. The WF defense was pretty good and the offense did enough to win, despite all the penalties, while the LB passing game had to carry the day for them as the Bruin running game was pretty much non-existent.

LB got the ball first and quickly punted. WF, with their promising sophomore QB Noah Kim, took the field and Kim's first pass was quickly picked off by LB's Cobb at the LB 47 yard line. LB failed to move the ball and WF got it back, only to have LB's Matheny pick off Kim at the LB 37 yard line. LB drove down into Westfield territory but missed a 32 yard FG try and the game was still scoreless. Each team then had two more unproductive drives before WF fielded a short punt, added a good return, and started their drive on the LB 22 yard line. WF's Asante then took the ball 22 yards for the games first score, putting WF up 7-0 (Steinhilber-XP) with 8:10 to play in the 2nd quarter. After another LB three and out, WF started on their own 32 yard line and used two long passes and a long run to get to the LB 13 yard line, where Kim passed to Cockrill for a 13 yard TD and WF was ahead 14-0 (Steinhilber-XP) with 4:10 to play in the half. LB answered on their next drive, going 79 yards to pull within 14-7 on a Darcy to Matheny 5 yard pass (James-XP). The big play in this drive was a fantastic, acrobatic, one-handed catch by LB's Cobb while well defended that went 41 yards to the WF 12 yard line. The half ended soon after, 14-7, in WF's favor.

WF opened the second half with the ball and was forced to punt. LB then went 73 yards to get to the WF 1 yard line (the big play was a 26 yard Darcy to Weidenger pass to the one) but a run for a loss, an incomplete pass, and a penalty meant they had to settle for a 22 yard James FG to cut the lead to 14-10 with 5:35 remaining in the 3rd quarter. WF punted on their next possession, pinning LB deep at their own 10 yard line. After a couple of plays LB elected to have Darcy lateral the ball to the slot receiver, who attempted a pass while in the defender's grasp and ended up throwing the ball into the arms of WF's McClain, who went 18 yards untouched for a pick-6. WF now led, 21-10, with 1:04 to play in the 3rd quarter. LB's Darcy was picked by WF's Morin on their next possession, with WF getting the ball on the LB 35 yard line. Two plays later, WF's Kim ran a QB keeper 38 yards to the end zone and WF was up 28-10 with 11:51 remaining in the game. At this point, being behind, LB had to resort to playing catchup and the WF defense managed to hold them to three short possessions, with the WF offense doing just enough on their possessions to run time off the clock and preserve the lead.

Good writeup as usual.

Additional comments:

There were obviously first game jitters for both teams.

WF punter did a great job pinning LB deep inside their territory throughout the game.

WF QB Noah Kim did great for his first game as a sophomore QB. I think he'll be running the Westfield offense for three years.

WF RB Eugene Asante was exciting to watch as he ran for 139 yards and one TD.

WF TE Nolan Cockrill was another go-to player in some situations as he was last year.

The Westfield defense probably earned the game ball.

More players deserve recognition but I can't remember them all. Looks like Westfield has another good team this season. It's a question of how far they will go.

Gotta say that one-handed catch by Lake Braddock's #21 Jordan Cobb was one of the most spectacular catches I have ever seen at the high school level (he also made a one hand grab on his interception). Catch at 0:42 in below link:
