No, this is not a baseball score. Or soccer or field hockey. This game was all about defense, with some untimely penalties, less than stellar offensive execution, a fumble on the 4 yard line, and a goal line stand mixed in.

Not much happened offensively in the first half. Robinson had four possessions in the first half: two punts, a stop on 4th down at the Westfield 36 yard line, and a missed 25 yard FG seconds before the half ended. Westfield ended their first possession with an end zone INT after reaching near the Robinson 30, a bad punt at midfield that gained zero yards, and a missed 35 yard FG.

In the second half both teams moved the ball slightly better but the defenses continued to rule the day. Westfield opened the half on their own 47 after Robinson tried an onside kick and quickly moved the ball downfield with mostly passes, reaching the 5 yard line with 1st and goal. On the next play, Beard was hit hard at the 4 and fumbled with Robinson recovering on their own 3 yard line. The score remained 0-0. Robinson could not gain yards on their possession and punted, giving Westfield the ball back on the Robinson 39 yard line. Westfield moved to the Robinson 25 yard line but stalled and had to settle for a 42 yard Delaney FG to go up 3-0 with 3:44 left in the 3rd quarter. Robinson started their next possession on their own 20 yard line and started moving downfield, converting on 4th and inches at their own 29 and again on 4th and 3 at their own 37 when they lined up for a punt and instead snapped the ball to the up back who gained 5 yards to keep the drive alive just after the 4th quarter began. A few plays later, Lee took the ball 35 yards to the Westfield 10 yard line and it looked like Westfield might be in trouble. However, with Robinson facing their 3rd 4th down of the drive on 4th and goal at the Westfield 3 yard line, the Westfield defense got just enough contact on the ball carrier to cause him to stumble and his knee touched down with the ball just inches short. Westfield took over but had to punt after 3 plays, giving Robinson the ball on the Robinson 48 with about 4-1/2 minutes left in the game. After a poorly executed series (a penalty, recovered fumble for a 2 yard loss, and two incompletions) Robinson punted the ball back to Westfield. Westfield, needing only a short drive and a few first downs to run out the clock, was again stopped by the Robinson defense and punted the ball back to Robinson at midfield with 3:07 left in the game. After the Westfield defense again held the Robinson run game in check, Robinson faced 4th and 1 at the Westfield 42 but picked up 3 yards on a run to keep the drive alive. After 3 plays and with about 1-1/2 minutes to go, Robinson again faced a 4th down, this time 4th and 9. The Robinson QB dropped back to pass but was immediately pressured and was sacked for a 14 yard loss. Westfield ran out the clock to win 3-0.

As the score indicates defense greatly overshadowed offense in this game. The Robinson defense is good and shut down the Westfield running game for the most part, never allowing any big runs, and also forced 2 turnovers. But the Westfield defense was very, very good (as they have been almost all season, giving up only 56 points all season, and only 20 in the past 5 games). The Westfield defense consistently controlled the Robinson running game, plus they came up with a huge goal line stand and the sack that ended the game.
