The bye week left Westfield a bit rusty but they managed to overcome two turnovers and a bunch of penalties to beat a game but overmatched Stonewall Jackson team, 31-13 on Thursday night.
Westfield received the opening kickoff and advanced all the way to the SJ 14 yard line, where a QB sneak on 4th and 3 failed. SJ went three and out on their first possession, with a short punt and a good return giving WF the ball on the SJ 20 yard line. WF quickly scored when Kim hit Clancy for a 7 yard passing TD and WF led, 7-0 (Nugent XP) with 5:24 to play in the first quarter. SJ would again go three and out, giving WF good field position near midfield. On this drive, WF's Kim fumbled the ball on the SJ 40 yard line and SJ's Jackson recovered the ball on the SJ 38 yard line. Again unable to move the ball, SJ lined up to punt but a high snap made the punter scramble and he was stopped short of a first down, giving WF the ball on their own 44 yard line. WF then put together a 56 yard drive, capped by a 1 yard TD run by Daniel, and WF extended the lead to 14-0 (Nugent XP) with 7:05 remaining in the half. On SJ's next possession they punted again, giving WF another midfield start at the WF 43 yard line. Several plays later WF's Kim was intercepted by SJ's Crenshaw at the SJ 30 yard line. With SJ looking to score before the half and gain some momentum, they were again forced to punt for the 5th consecutive time and the half ended shortly after with WF ahead, 14-0.
The second half started with SJ on their 23 yard line and this time they drove into WF territory before SJ's Jung heaved a high arcing pass into a group of four players in the end zone, with SJ's Reese coming away with a nice leaping catch to cut WF's lead to 14-7 (Melendez XP) with 7:46 to play in the third quarter. However, the 14 point lead would be quickly restored when WF's Morin returned the kickoff 96 yards to the SJ one yard line, where Daniel scored his second TD on a 1 yard run and the score was now 21-7 (Nugent XP) with 7:27 to play in the third quarter. SJ then put together a 60 yard drive, scoring when Albea ran the ball in from 2 yards out, cutting the lead to 21-13 (Melendez XP blocked by WF's Asante) with 2:51 to play in the third quarter. WF's next drive started at their own 29 yard line and moved deep into the SJ red zone before stalling at the SJ 4 yard line, so WF elected to kick a 21 yard FG (Nugent), which was good, and the lead was extended to 24-13 with 8:39 remaining in the game. SJ was forced to punt on the ensuing possession, giving WF the ball on their own 20 yard line. WF then put together their longest drive of the game, capped by a 27 yard Goodman run up the middle to make the score 31-13 (Nugent XP) with 5:10 remaining to play. After another SJ punt, WF drove into the SJ red zone again before running out the clock to win, 31-13.
