Westfield hit the ground running in the game, the first one with all their (non-injured) players back. Greene took the opening kickoff 90 yards to start the game and you could sense things might be better than the last four games without the suspended players. After a Briar Woods punt on their first possession, Westfield took over on the BW 41. On the second play Scanlon hit Frimpong for a 42 yard passing TD and WF was up 15-0 after a 2XP with less than 5 minutes gone in the game. A few series later WF fumbled and BW found themselves just outside the WF red zone. Failing to move the ball, BW attempted a 25 yard FG near the beginning of the 2nd quarter that fell well short, so the score remained 15-0.
After WF punted on their next possession, the teams traded fumbles to each other on consecutive plays. After the WF fumble, BW was again deep in WF territory but the defense rose to the occasion and, aided by a BW penalty, BW found themselves facing 4th and 14 at the WF 30 yard line. Their pass fell incomplete and WF took over on their own 30 yard line. They quickly marched down field and scored, only to have the passing play called back for holding. Several plays later Scanlon hit Z. Johnson for a 28 yard pass to the BW 5 yard line, where Beard took it in on the next play to make the score 22-0 at the 1:06 mark of the half. Halftime.
BW fumbled on their first possession of the 2nd half, with Pickett recovering the ball on the BW 9 yard line. A play or two later Scanlon hit Cockrill with a 4 yard pass and it was 29-0, effectively ending the game since BW was being stuffed by the WF defense almost every series. BW punted on their next possession and WF started their next drive on their own 46 yard line. Aided by a Scanlon scramble for 4 yards on a 4th and 3 yards at the BW 28, the drive resulted in a 21 yard TD pass that was called back for an ineligible receiver down field. WF regrouped, found themselves on the BW 26 yard line, and then Scanlon rolled to his right and threw the ball back across the field to a wide open Monticue who easily scored to push the score to 36-0 with 5:30 remaining in the 3rd quarter. With a running clock now in effect, and liberal substitutions, neither team managed to move the ball well and the game ended with that score, 36-0.
The WF defense was again dominant and other than a handful of mid-sized BW gains on runs/passes, shut down BW's offense. The WF defense can be depended on every game, despite the recent loss of their defensive captain to a season ending knee injury. Several injuries caused WF to shuffle some players around and some new faces saw additional playing time. Some players found themselves playing positions they were unaccustomed to but stepped up and played well. The return of their top 3 receivers made a noticeable difference and if WF continues to get at least modest production from the RB position, the addition of the missing players in the passing game bodes extremely well for their chances the remainder of the season.
