Westfield traveled to Quince Orchard for a short scrimmage today (I say short because it only lasted 90 minutes, including half time). The first half was played in a (mostly) game like situation (except with some aspects of the kicking game and with some offensive series starting on the 25 yard line). The first half was contested mostly with the first string for both teams, with a few subs getting worked in. The second half was one series each with mostly the first strings, then the subs finished out the session.
WF opened the scrimmage and quickly drove 75 yards to get inside the QO 1 yard line, where they faced 3rd and inches. Instead of handing the ball off and ramming it in (the run had been, for the most part, working) they tried a quick rollout pass to the FB. The QBs throw was off and QO intercepted on the goal line. QO then went three and out, giving WF the ball on their own 45. They again drove the field quickly, but stalled near the red zone and failed to convert a long 4th and 15 from around the 25 yard line. QO, starting on their own 16, ran two plays before the QB kept the ball and went 80 yards around the left end for a TD - 7-0, QO - the only real mistake the defense made the entire game. WF quickly drove the field for a third time, but again stalled near the red zone and failed to convert a 4th and 5. WF stopped the next QO drive with an INT at midfield, advancing the ball to the QO 35, but again failed to generate any offense deep in QO territory and had a punt from the QO 43 partially blocked. QO closed out the half without any further scoring.
QO started the second half and ran 10 consecutive plays, regardless of outcome, then gave the ball back to WF without scoring. WF, now with mostly subs, went 3 and out, then QO got a 43 yard FG on their possession to go up 10-0. Each team then had one more unproductive series and the scrimmage ended.
WF looked OK overall, and again played a lot - a real lot - of underclassmen. Lots of kids got a look and the WF defense was again very good - except for the one long run they certainly contained QO's offense. The inability of the offense to finish drives has left them with something to work on for next week's opener against Lake Braddock.
