Where you gonna be Friday night?

Graham vs. Bluefield. One of the biggest rivalries in the country.. Been to this game for 42 years in a row, not going to miss it now. I'll be amongst the 10,000 or so in the stadium, with about 2,000 or so out in the parking lot watching the game being live streamed or just hanging out tailgating. It is truly a college atmosphere. You would have to see it to believe it. About a hundred tents in the parking lot....free food from vendors. Musicians, reunions.... you name it.....Cornhole....barbecue... it's flat out awesome.

The game will be live-streamed by "Great American Rivalry Series"... if you can't make it to a game, I recommend you watch this one, it is a very professional broadcast with sideline interviews and the whole nine yards.

The second meeting between new rivals R.E. Lee and Riverheads, although I'd like to go to Graham/Bluefield!

No game for Clarke, so probably try to hit Jefferson at Millbrook to see if Clarke has a chance to beat Millbrook this year at Millbrook.

However, just realized that Louisa is at Sherando. May have to contact Louisadad on here to meet up!

Don't think it'll be much of a battle for the Axe this year. Hate to watch it.

I'll be heading over to Gate City to watch my Blues take on the Devils at Legion field. Should be a big crowd and a great atmosphere again as there usually is when these two teams get together !
Football Fridays.........Love it !!!

Heading to King William to watch Madison's air show! I think MC can score enough but their defense has struggle to stop the run the last few years (that I have been following them).

where, how, and why did this rivalry start?

Bluefield has the state line run through it. So there are Bluefield, VA and Bluefield, WV. Graham is on the VA side and Bluefield High is on the WV side. The schools are probably like 5 miles apart and they share the same stadium. You don't need much else to make one hell of a rivalry. Add in both have many, many state titles to their name, and you get a major rivalry.

Here's a video of some of the tailgating going on a few years back. Not all of the parking lot is shown, but it gives you a good idea of what's going on outside of the game.... Usually folks arrive to set up their grills and stuff early on friday morning. Some pitch their tents the night before.

Here is an overhead shot of Mitchell Stadium, where Graham and Bluefield play, just imagine it at full capacity...

Here is a trailer for the game on GARS for this season, doesn't really show the whole crowd, but has some good shots of the crowd.

Been going to this game every year since I was 5 years old (a long time)... not sure if anybody has that streak beaten.

Lee-Riverheads. I originally planned to go see Ft Defiance at Buffalo Gap but the Lee game should be much better. Lee is moving in the right direction and showed progressive improvement week to week last year. Riverheads' reign of terror is far from over, but they don't appear to be as strong as in the past. The two teams seem to have reached pivotal crossroads. Besides, Lee's field is within walking distance of my apartment.

Keith Stone, are you pre-gaming at BW3?

thank you for sharing with so much details. this is awesome! wat do they play for? buckingham vs appo has an axe with buckingham colors on one side and appo colors on others side. same thing with Rustburg. we play for a lantern colored different on both sides.

MC's defense was unfortunately vulnerable against the pass too last year. The offense is fun to watch though. The KW teams I've seen have been well rounded and very physical. I doubt they will have much trouble with my Mountaineers, js.

They are going to struggle early, I heard they did not score in scrimmage against Rapp, so this one should be anybody's game

If you walk down to the Lee field to see the game tomorrow night, you should have no trouble finding a place to park and you should get an EXCELLENT seat, since the game is at Riverheads!!!

I'll be in Potomac Md trying to secure a track championship! While hoping my Hornets can start the season off right. Also while not so secretly hoping the team a little south from us loses to the those boys from Lee

Ha ha! It looks like you're right. My schedule has Riverheads with only 4 home games this season. The VHSL Master schedule shows it as Away games for both teams. Are you sure it is in Greenville?

This week Amherst at Salem, with the Lancers seeking revenge in one of the harder places to play. Next week is a difficult choice.....Heritage @ Northside, or Rustburg @ Appomattox???? Both games are sure to be very good
rustburg, Heritage, and Amherst all gonna come at us with chip on shoulder. rustburg is a rivalry game, so it will be good.

After Friday I crossed a game off the list, and now the debate is Western Abermarle (awesome DE combination)@ Brookville or Rustburg (serious issues on both sides of the line) @ Appomattox. Looking at the tape, the Raiders are very good again this year (Kelso brothers are fast and hit everything) and will take advantage of Rustburg mistakes. Congrats on the win last week, that game was over quickly.

thx, i knew we was gonna have a strong team again. Scruggs gotta get lil more comfortable at throwing ball, but its gonna come. honestly we didnt have to throw though because the rushing game was on point. Oh and there is only 1 Kelso brother out there (Delonta #26), they moved him to Safety and he playing RB a lil this year. His brother #21 Deron is out most of season with achilles injury from track. This is a big blow to our D but we have enough talented athletes to make up for it.

What you mean Rustburg got issues on both sides of line?

Don't be deceived by the score or the rushing yards. That was a very poor tackling team they played. Lost count of all the bad snaps....at around 15. Teams like the Raiders will expose mistakes like those. One of the guards/d tackles was spent and was a total non factor. When they rotated him out they had a much better push upfront. The other tackle is very good, so it can be difficult to catch. The heat played a part, but those are the issues I saw on the film. They can help themselves by rotating linemen more frequently.

bro, if they have 15 fumbled snaps vs. Raiders. its gonna be a blowout. we het into backfield too fast. It will be a long night.

Great American Rivalry series gives a trophy to the winning team. Winning team would receive a trophy in years past.

I will be at Abingdon who hosts Christiansburg on Friday. I would love to travel to see the Richlands vs. Graham game being played on Thursday night. Problem is that I have to work until 5 and I'm not sure that I could get there before game time. I work in Bristol...would love to catch that game because I believe it will be a great 2A West match up.

If you drive straight through you'll have about 10 minutes to spare
