WILSON MEMORIAL AND GLENVAR ADVANCE TO GROUP A DIVISION II BASEBALL FINAL

RADFORD, Va. ?
Wilson Memorial and Glenvar High Schools' baseball teams both won semifinal games Saturday in the Virginia High School League's 2013 Spring Jubilee. The teams will vie for the state title Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at RU Baseball Stadium in Radford.

Wilson Memorial 6, Grayson County 1 ?Brandon Gochenour threw a complete-game five-hitter and gave up one run to lead Wilson Memorial to its first final since winning the state title in 1990. Wilson Memorial also won titles in 1980 and 1977.

Thomas Goins led off the third with a single and came in to score on Brandon Poole's RBI groundout to give Wilson Memorial a 1-0 advantage. The lead stretched to 2-0 in the fourth after a run-scoring double by Heath Hatfield and a sac fly from Goins.

Grayson County cut the lead to 3-1 in the fifth. Luke Wilson's triple led off the inning, and he scored on a sac fly by Ty Cannaday, but it was the only scratch Gochenour would give up.

Wilson Memorial added two runs in the sixth and another insurance run in the seventh.

Cannaday took the loss on the mound for Grayson County logging 5.1 innings and giving up five runs on eight hits.

Glenvar 4, Nandua 3 ?
Zack Duncan pitched 6.1 innings, and Tyler Crockett notched a save in relief striking out the only two batters he faced to lead Glenvar to a berth in the state championship game.

Nandua's Noah Zember tripled home a run with one out in the seventh and cut the lead to 4-3 and chase Duncan, who had been stellar in giving up just six hits and three runs. Crockett closed the door with the tying run just 90-feet from scoring.

Glenvar built a 4-0 lead with a single run in the first, two in the second, and another single run in the fourth. Tyler DeHart gave Glenvar the lead 1-0 with an RBI single on an unearned run. Crockett's RBI base hit pushed the lead to 2-0, and Duncan also drove in a run with a single in the second. Chance Wilson pushed across the final run for Glenvar with a single in the third.

Nandua rallied with a pair of runs in the sixth before Zember's RBI triple in the seventh. Hunter Taylor tripled, and Austin Heenan walked setting up a two-run double by Curtis Ormsby. Duncan ended the rally forcing a groundout with Ormsby in scoring position.

Glenvar was last in the title game in 2003 and won its only championship in 1994.
