Some nights you have one of those games that just gets off to a bad start and never really improves. That was the case at Senior Night at Wilson tonight as the Hornets used a 21-7 third quarter, the only one either team could be proud of, to ease past Riverheads.

Things were so bad in the early going that the teams exchanged turnovers and missed shots for the first four minutes of the game. Finally Wilson broke the ice halfway through the period and when the quarter ended with only a 7-3 score, you knew it was going to be that kind of night.

Things didn't get much better in the second quarter as Wilson gave RHS plenty of chances to get back into the game but the Big Red just couldn't get anything going with any consistency. The half ended with a football-sounding 19-10 score.

As the second half started, it became obvious that the Hornets wanted to pound it inside to 6'9" Justin Kyle and put the game away early. He obliged with a few buckets but never truly dominated the game as the fans may have hoped. Instead they saved most of their cheers for the subs when the benches cleared.

The only bright spot for RHS was the three-point shooting of Brett Hostetler and Bradley Roberts, as each hit two of them. Roberts in fact scored eight of his game-high 13 points after being hit with his fourth foul of the game. Fortunately the game progressed quickly with no injuries and the gym was cleared by 8:20 despite the Senior Night festivities.

Speaking of quick, it only took the Riverheads JVs a little bit over an hour to roll past Wilson 42-29 in the opener. After spotting the Hornets the first bucket of the game, the Gladiators scored the next eight points and never looked back as they raised their record to 11-4 on the season.

No matter how they may feel after this loss, the Gladiators have no time at all to dwell on it, as Stuarts Draft and its brand of madness will roll into Greenville about 18 hours from now. But things could perk up later for the Big Red, as they wrap up the week with a home game Friday against Stonewall and a Saturday afternoon trip to Bath. A win in either or both of those games would certainly boost the spirits of the Gladiators and their faithful fans.
