It may take me a while to get into the spring swing of things since I am still in March Madness mode, but due to the extremely nice weather today, I attended my first RHS baseball game. The Gladiators were playing at Wilson in the second game of a double-header, with the first game being a 3:00 affair in which the Hornets hosted R E Lee before facing the Gladiators in the nightcap.

I assume they came up with this creative scheduling idea due to weather postponements, but the Hornets must be glad they did, since they swept both games. I was not there for the Lee game but I think I heard the score was 12-6. They then held off the Big Red 6-3 in the nightcap.

In that second game, Wilson opened the scoring with a solo homer in the bottom of the second and then broke things open in the third with a four-run outburst. That chased starter Michael Robertson off the mound and his replacement, fellow sophomore Elijah Dunlap could not contain the Hornets either as the score rose to 6-0.

To their credit the Gladiators did not give up as they trimmed the lead to 6-2 in the fourth and added another in the fifth. In the top of the sixth, they left the sacks loaded, so it was a game of "if only" for the visitors. I left after 5 1/2, so I am not sure if they mounted any further threat in the top of the 7th.

A good day for the Hornets for sure and a disappointing loss for the Big Red (now 1-2 in the district and 2-2 overall) but it is early in the season and I am sure Coach Painter has already started turning this game into a learning experience for his team.
