Most of the time it's hard for us to appreciate how important the "here and now" will be in the future.
If you ever discover any records about Cape Charles High School, on the Eastern Shore, please let me know. An old friend of mine that played on some of the first Dinwiddie teams in the mid-60's told me about going over there and playing a game. Cape Charles only had enough players to field a team, (14 he thinks), so the Dinwiddie boys thought they would finally "whip up" on somebody. He remembers they got beat something like 54-0. Another player's wife that was a cheerleader at that game told me they cheered every time Cape Charles scored because they didn't know any different!
I did read a little about Cape Charles football from way back then recently. It was by a player that eventually became a Cardiologist and a very respected part of the "shore" community. Dr. Lloyd Kellam. They got him to make an oral recording of his memories. He told about the team piling into a workboat and riding across the Bay to play Mathews County. I think he said they traveled that way because the school couldn't afford to transport them.
I went inside the long closed Cape Charles High School back in the 90's. There were still assignments written on a couple of chalk boards in some classrooms. I think the school closed in 1970. Incidently, the building was sold a few years ago and is now apartments. Cape Charles Lofts.
One last thing about Cape Charles. The original Cape Charles School, c1893, still exist. A retired guy bought it in the 90's and restored it from the ground up as his private residence. We bumped into him one day somewhere, and started carring on a bunch of mess with him. We asked if he would give us a tour. He said the fee was a case of beer, but he would trust us to return with the beer later. We spent hours looking the place over, and talking. We went back a few days later. We had had such a good time we decided to double the admission fee, and took him two cases of beer. Of course, we stayed long enough to help him consume most of it.
